I'm going out with some mates next Friday to celebrate a birthday and am looking for a relaxed restarant/bar to have some good food and wine/drinks. I'm thinking around the West End somewhere.

Does anyone have any recommendations?

Bocca di Lupo is great- if you can get a table. Amazing food, charming waiters, and very reasonably priced. Just opposite the Windmill, it's a good location too.

It's on a Friday and Friday means fish. I love this place in St Martin's Court in the West End and you can often do a bit of star spotting while you're there.

The Red Lion Mayfair

I used to frequent this place a lot when I worked in Mayfair and really liked it. It's close to Shepherds Market and Green Park tube. Very old fashioned sort of place. Depends what you like really.

They all look great with the exception of RD's selection. ;-) I think I piss my mates off enough with my love of sport so to take them somewhere like that, when they've all taken the day off to celebrate my birthday with me might be a step too far.

We've arranged to head up to top floor of the gherkin for a pre-dinner/drinking drink so have been contemplating Hoxton rather than the West End. Argh decsions!!

Depends how close to the gherkin you want - smiths of smithfield and club gascon both good (unless you're a veggie) - club gascon prob slightly more formal but amazing food. Hope you have a great meal.

Skylon at the South Bank. It is in Southwark, so you can impress your pals with your borough's variety and elan, and it is a good restaurant with good views of the Thames. Check out the website for special offers. The service is good as are the cocktails. I would go about 12 30 - 13 00 to secure a good table by the windows. Enjoy it!
