gertie
Having spent most of my adult life, apart from a brief rebellion as a Claphamite, in the green and sometimes pleasant lands of ED - I am now on the move to the far reaches of the uncharted globe known as Beckenham.Born in Dulwich Hospital, I can truly claim to be from here.Like many of us indigenous inhabitants that have posted on here, tis with mixed feelings that I depart from this land.To say that ED has well and truly disappeared up it's own backside in the last couple of decades or so, is a gross understatement. The worried well, helicopter parents who shriek at the top of their voices when communicating in the most smugly patronising tones to their entitled-can=do-no-wrong offspring, is a sound I most certainly shall not miss. This mainly occurs in supermarkets where they anxiously seek the approval of all those around them. What a great parent I am, I discuss with little Oliver the choice of cheeses before him. Listen everybody, even tho I'm obnoxiously loud, I'm insecure about my parenting and need your approval. But that is not to say that I won't miss the place. Dulwich Park and the cafe on L.L amongst a few.Oddly enough, one thing I will miss is this forum.I have a love/hate relationship with the EDF, but in terms of a vibrant community forum, it's got to be right up there with the Oscar winners. So having looked at the Beckenham forum (and collapsed with sheer tedium) my parting plea is that if any of the kind, intelligent dynamic souls that help to run this forum, fancy giving the Beckenhamions some instruction; PLEASE please do so.Even better still, if Admin fancies moving to Beckenham where the air is fresh and clean, please do so.But, don't all come...Gertie, over and out. Otta
It's okay, most of the people on here (well the lounge) left Dulwich years ago. You'll find more and more people moving from Dulwich to Beckenham, so you'll feel at home. Only problem with it is there are quite a high number of people that grew up in white working class households, then moved to Beckenham in the 80s / 90s and felt they'd really made it. They now look down their noses at people on benefits or living in council estates. Louisa
I may be joining the rest of you locals in exile soon. I've had the nicest day today, got off the train at Exeter, went for dinner at Michael Caines restaurant opposite the cathedral. Now sipping wine overlooking Woolacombe Bay with hubby enjoying a nice chilled lager! Oh and the sun is shining still! It's times like this that I could happily leave behind ED and get more for my money out in the sticks and live a stress free life. The only things about ED I would miss are the few shops I use and the convenience of having 'stuff' to do nearby. I think the exodus of working class people will continue apace over the coming decades. Louisa. Bloody inbreds should be grateful Londoners wanna spend their money down here! Most of the people I've met here are from somewhere else anyway. I don't intend to gentrify anywhere. Shame there's no pie and mash shop like in Southend but the views are better and the weather has been lovely. Louisa. Louisa
Otta where did she move to? As much as love the north of the county for a visit, I think I would need more life. Torquay or Paignton would suit me just fine. I've met some peculiar people here on previous holidays and I would assume they are "local". But for the most part, more brummies scouser and cockneys than anyone else. Nice to be home from home. Louisa. Louisa
Ah "the gateway to the moor". Been there a few times before, sandwiched between Newton Abbott and Exeter. Pretty little place, very close to Dartmoor too. Walking distance in fact. Lovely place to retire to. I can see why so many people come down here to live, it most certainly is very beautiful. It's a shame in a way that some of the proper locals are a bit weird, especially in these far flung locations. Louisa. ????
same old boring unpleasant stereotyping. I mix with parents in SE22 everyday and hardly EVER hear or see this 'braying, snobbery/entitlement" that the chippy usual suspects bang on AND ON about. Farewell to you and your chippy insecurity. Alan Medic
I can't help thinking that a lot of resentment is because other people have more money to spend. Maybe Oliver will become an expert on cheese and have his own TV programme.
