It's part of Southern Rails keep fit 'Walk and Ride' scheme.

12 mins wait means you can get off the train at South Berm walk to Queens Road Peckham where you rejoin the train..

Yeah, 1 token train an hour is barely worth the effort. They may as well just close the station until this is sorted.

If you poke about on the national rail website it has historic data for train journeys actual and scheduled and a rate times. It doesn't go back that far though.

Not sure how relevant this is with people who have year passes etc, but a fellow student from college has developed a phone application which helps you get repaid from delayed trains. Not used it myself as I'm biking most places now, but there's a better write up here:

The problem is that a lot of people use pay as you go and an app for train arrivals. If you see that the train is cancelled you go a different route but then don't have a ticket for the ED - LB route as you haven't swiped in at ED. My understanding of this (unless I'm wrong) is that you wouldn't be eligible for compensation (despite the fact that a bus plus train alternative may cost more. Ideally I'd like to be claiming compensation from Southern every day for the fact that there is virtually no service from ED, but don't think I'm eligible unless someone else can tell me otherwise?
I was also going to ask how the trains from Peckham Rye to Blackfriars have been in the mornings? Starting new job tomorrow and need to arrive at 1000; so don't want to be late. Have they been delayed? Journey takes 15 mins but I was thinking of leaving an hour to spare just in case in the inevitable happens...

Delays of a few minutes are common, cancellations not that rare. It's not as bad as the trains into London bridge but it's bad enough I use the 63 to go all the way to work a lot of the time. However, I live a mile and half from the station and get on the 63 or 363 to get to the station anyway, and so I resent getting off the bus to get on a crowded train which could then be delayed. I would feel different if I was a short walk to the station.


If you have to be in for 10 it shouldn't be too bad as there's a few different ones not long after 9 and you'd often get a seat that time of morning too. The ones before 9 are overcrowded.

indiepanda - I've found there's been lots more cancellations on the Blackfriars / Thameslink trains over the past month than there ever were before. It's well worth checking the train tracker app for up to the minute info in the morning. That said, when it works, it's a good line if you can get on - particularly if you start at 10 when you should be able to miss the worst of the rush hour crush.

Forgive me if this has already been covered or isn't relevant, as I haven't read the whole thread, but I got a survey form through my door today soliciting views on cancelling the Southern Railway franchise (I do realise the thread is on train cancellations and not the franchise!)


Helen Hayes (MP) is apparently calling for Southern's franchise to be cancelled as a matter of urgency, and I guess the survey results would help bring this about.


I'm not filling it in because I very rarely use trains these days and haven't experienced any problems, but if you do and you haven't received the survey form, you might want to contact them. It only gives an address, which is East Dulwich Labour Action Team, 264 Rosendale Road, London SE24 9DL, but it is easy to contact MPs online.

The Govt is to blame for this.

They privatised railways, they offer the franchises, so they are responsible to ensure the service is delivered.

They have failed to ensure this. While Southern execs and 'consultants' line their pockets, the passenger gets a reduced service and the Govt says it's out of their hands, because some company is 'responsible' for providing the service. Pure negligence of successive, spineless, Govts.

Well privatisation is always going to put profit for the few above the needs of the many using the service, isn't it.


The old British Rail may have had its faults but nothing like what we've got now.


The only hope is if Labour get in, but what a terrible mess they will have to sort out in renationalising the rail system.

We all agree that East Dulwich / London Bridge service is a disgraceful non-service. The so-called temporary timetable is a cynical way for Southern to appear to be running a more reliable service. They are so pathetic, however, that they fail even to deliver this timetable; and, in particular to operate the handful of trains that are supposed to run between 06.30 and 09.00.


Despite all the complaints, public petitions, interventions from MPs, the Mayor and media coverage .... nothing happens! Why? The Government is 100% to blame for allowing Southern to continue this farce - they awarded a long-term franchise with pathetic, inadequate sanctions in place for non-performance. Therefore, Southern aren't suffering any significant financial pain for the misery they are imposing on us! Meanwhile, the Government sheds crocodile tears but finds the money to push ahead with the HS2 vanity project: ?90 billion 'down the drain' and counting! They should invest that money instead in much needed improvements to the existing UK rail system.


The last Rail Minister, Claire Perry, resigned after failing to tackle the current mess. BUT WHAT ACTION IS THE GOVERNMENT TAKING NOW TO END THE MISERY THAT IS SOUTHERN RAIL?!?!?!

    • Whose priorities? Peckham Rye station is operated by Southern Railway. Southwark Council doesn’t own or operate the station, and it can't force Southern or anyone else to install lifts at the station. I'd love there to be lifts at Peckham Rye. It would be very expensive.
    • Anything that improves the front of the station has to be a good thing. Opening up the square in front is a superb idea, it will show the beauty of the architecture of the station, just as they did at Kings Cross when they ripped out the monstrosity of the 1960's frontage and now the station gleams. People probably go there to see the beauty of it. Now wouldn't it be good if once opened up and cleaned up, people visited to see how wonderful it then looks. I guess there is a generally lack of trust that the station square will open by the end of next year, HOWEVER, when the current frontage is removed and the square is opened up as it originally was it will look grand.

Shockingly, I actually have to agree with some of the points you've raised.  Reform are the relics of BNP and UKIP, both detestable so add them together and you get an even worse result which is Reform that the UK can do without. 
    • Farage has done nothing but divide and diminish this country, all in the name of his ego and his bank balance. Brexit has made us poorer and has damaged our influence in the world. He supported Trump who is directly threatening our interests and he supported Liz Truss' disastrous budget. He has done his best to ensure our country's decline and now people too proud to admit their mistakes and the deleterious impact of UKIP / The Brexit party / Reform Ltd are again voting for him to finish the job / nail down the coffin lid. Yes, he is a plastic patriot.
