At Denmark Hill for 0830 this morning, in time for a train that usually gets to Blackfriars around 0850. Didn't get in until nearly 10am thanks to a succession of signalling/ broken-down train/ no-one-seems-to-know problems and then immense congestion from our line and the Sutton loop. Fun times.


This isn't typical, however. Most days I'm dealing with a predictable 5-10 minute delay.

I just don't understand. In the midst of all this shambles on Southern we, who are lucky enough to use West Dulwich, are having our services substantially improved with trains every 15 mins right up to midnight(now around 9 pm.). Not looking a Gift Horse, but what is going on??

Is this 8:02 train really running, though? There's nothing in the timetable to suggest so.


Does anyone here take this service through to London Bridge, or is there some confusion?

The 8:02 does run but turns round at south Bermondsey. It's sparsely populated and has air con! However you need to change at Peckham rye or queens road for the overground and then again at Canada water for jubilee if you want get to canary wharf or back to London bridge and the west end.


The overcrowding at Canada water (single escalator down to jubilee) is getting really bad.

Altrnatively look a month or so in advance and it will show the old timetable, as they are only updating it with the reduced timetable a few weeks in advance at the moment.

That makes sense, I wonder if they will be able to space them all evenly so its 00/10/20/30/40/50 past the hour etc, which would be great.


Assuming that stupid situation where a train arrives at Clapham and you see the Imperial Wharf-bound train pulling out (and vv if coming from that way) will be improved with this too. It almost seems deliberately malicious.

I tried to get a thameslink train from Denmark hill the other day. Signalling problems meant no trains. There was loads of confusion / little info and so people were hanging around whilst more and more people continued entering the station. It got dangerously overcrowded and became increasing difficult to get off the platform. It's only a matter of time until someone gets hurt due to this kind of terrible mismanagement. Meanwhile our taxes continue to be siphoned off into the pockets of Executives and shareholders.

The 08:30 to LB this morning was delayed first of all, and then cancelled at 08:45 - no announcement, no explanation given. As the next train wasn't until 09:30, everyone left the platform en masse and tried to get on a bus. Several went by without even allowing anyone on they were so full. I ended up walking up to Denmark Hill and taking a train to Blackfriars which was also very full.


What on earth is going to happen next week if the 5 day strike goes ahead?

Or in September when people are back at work and children are back at school? The Southern website still says that the revised timetable will be in place "until train crew availability returns to normal" - which doesn't sound like it will be any time soon.

I've been staying well away from the trains due to the revised timetable but the 1 day I did go a train arrived at 08.02 and went to London Bridge.

Someone at work said additional trains are sometimes diverted through East Dulwich.

It's a shambles but glad it's summer and I can use the bike instead.

      I have a warning from EE that they're undertaking work locally to me, I'm assuming the south end of Underhill, over the next 5 days so there may be a temporary reduction in service. Otherwise it's fine. In case you suddenly hear adverse comments, problems may only be short lived.

      For those of us in Forest Hill this is great news.  As well as a better connection to Clapham, a quicker route to Catford is very welcome, as we often use Catford stations a lot for the Thameslink and to go down to Bromley and Beckenham. A stop in Brixton would be welcome.  Yes we have the P4.  But have you ever used the P4?

      Sophie, I have to thank you for bringing me squarely into 2025.  I was aware of 4G/5G USB dongles for single computers, and of being able to use smartphones for tethering 4G/5G, but hadn't realised that the four mobile networks were now providing home hub/routers, effectively mimicking the cabled broadband suppliers.  I'd personally stick to calling the mobile networks 4G/5G rather than wifi, so as not to confuse them with the wifi that we use within home or from external wifi hotspots. 4G/5G is a whole diffferent, wide-area set of  networks, and uses its own distinct wavebands. So, when you're saying wi-fi, I assume you're actually referring to the wide-area networks, and that it's not a matter of just having poor connections within your home local area network, or a router which is deficient.   If any doubt, the best test will be with a computer connected directly to the router by cable; possibly  trying different locations as well. Which really leaves me with only one maybe useful thing to say.  :) The Which pages at https://www.which.co.uk/reviews/broadband/article/what-is-broadband/what-is-4g-broadband-aUWwk1O9J0cW look pretty useful and informative. They include local area quality of coverage maps for the four providers (including 5G user reports I think) , where they say (and I guess it too is pretty common knowledge): Our survey of the best and worst UK mobile networks found that the most common issues mobile customers have are constantly poor phone signal and continuous brief network dropouts – and in fact no network in our survey received a five star rating for network reliability.
