The time to get buildings listed is before planning permission is given to make radical changes. Time is running out to make objections to plans for Railway Rise:

Jeremy, the former Iceland building was a unique example of 1960's architecture. The petruding brickwork in a balustrade style, leading upto the angled rectangular windows were quite one off, particularly for that era and style of build in and around suburban London. The noteworthy glazed bricks leading upto the windows were certainly unique in that style of architecture too, never seen anything like it anywhere else. Seems a terrible loss when I look at what's been done to it now.

Actually the original tiled finish was of far higher quality. A nice bit of mid-century design. Looks like they've removed it for no other reason than the developer was too tight to fork out for bespoke replacement windows. Off the peg windows which ruin the original composition and cheap render to fill the gaps. Crap.

  • 2 weeks later...

The inside area is vast...

No doubt internal walls to be built.. Storage / Staff areas / Toilets.

The floor has to be laid.. then the ceiling installed... Wiring /Lighting .... Air-con ... Fire alarms..

Power for the Fridges .. counters.. Tills..

Then the Counters themselves... Tills.. Electronics .. all will need testing..

Fire exits.. Signs..

Will be a while yet.. before they can start to stock up and finally open.

The flats are just a frame.. will be while for them to be completed.

Louisa, quite and, though of little concern to those not directly affected, I am simply dreading the inevitable surge in vehicles, parking and congestion as people swing by for their M&S shop. The developers always said shoppers would walk, cycle or take buses and public transport. With Southern services being decimated and buses struggling, do we really believe the well heeled will simply hop on a bike or trot along from Dulwich Village to get their grub (not to mention booze)?

Of course, those same developers promised a lovely green roof. It seems what we will actually get is two tiny beds of bog standard municipal planting.

Next phase is when all those offices are turned into flats!

    • Thanks Sue.  No the car just drove on.  We don't know if they noticed.  We were driving behind.  We were just glad we could be with the cat, and take him to the vet, rather than leaving him there 😞
    • Certainly the infamous (and mythical) SE London cat killer turned out to be foxes attacking dying and dead cats injured by cars, but fox: cat encounters do appear to happen, even where cats are victorious. Fox: adult humans less so. At least where foxes are the aggressors.
    • That was very kind of you to take the cat to the vet. Did the car not stop?
    • This is a bit outside our area, but I'm posting in case .... Last night (Sat.20 Dec), around 10.30, we saw a cat hit by a car in St Norbert Road, SE4.  We took him to the out of hours vet in Beckenham, where they confirmed that he had died.  They will see if he is microchipped, and contact the owner if so.  They were very kind.   He was a lovely cat, grey and white.  He must have died very quickly.  So sorry to be the bearer of bad news 😞 The vet is Medivet in Beckenham, tel: 0208 650 2003.
