I have a couple of french friends coming to London first week of August. Can anyone recommend a nice restaurant as it is a birthday celebration too (I know Le Chardon is good) but it doesnt have to be french, many thanks

Plenty to choose from, but if you don't mind sharing small plates, I'd take them to either Miss Tapas (can't book, so have to get there early) or Pedler (book now!).

Alternatively, Platform 1 has a great track record in bringing exciting chefs to the Lane - so have a look at their current offering (they have guest chefs for a few weeks or months at a time) http://platform1.london/

French House is fun and good value, but they might not want French fare...

Pedler is good, I really like it. The upstairs restaurant at John The Unicorn is fantastic too... another "small plates" type offering (not pub grub at all).

Also, Camberwell Arms or Crooked Well over the hill are both safe bets.

Only been to John the Unicorn once, but the very yummy dessert was the best part of an excellent meal!
