There is at least one of the (likely very) many No 12 new Routemasters that have had windows retrofitted on both decks but only on the pavement-facing side. They slide open on the inside so keep the flush look of the original design.

Cue complaints of "it's too draughty" as soon as mid-August is out....

Now, if they'd just put in some comfy seats with a bit of leg room, get rid of one of the staircases and back doors, redesign downstairs to make more room and work on the suspension (like the previous perfectly comfortable, spacious and well designed incarnation), we'll have decent buses again.

Amen to that! The a/c is appalling, it just blasts warm air. These are the most uncomfortable buses I've ever been on.

This precisely.

If memory serves, these new buses cost approx ?100k more to build per bus than the older, better ones.

The smell on these buses is awful, I'm guessing that was due to no windows / flow of air? Rancid.

And sod the windows on the 12 - when are we going to get replacements for the 176? I know of no other local route that runs buses that are 13 years old. We'll have bus-spotters riding them soon for their vintage value.

The 176 got a two year extension last year to run the old buses until 2017.

The N176s (or perhaps it is without the "N" because it is a 24-hr service) at night are much more modern and quieter (not that they could be any louder) but I think they are run at night because of their better CCTV. It is a shame because the 176s are old workhorses that should be put out to pasture sooner rather than later.

Do you remember the ones with the slatted, wooden floors and ingrained grime? It was like TfL meets Peaky Blinders.

The 176 at night uses spare buses from the 133 route which also operates out of Norwood Bus Garage.

Buses used during the day have been converted to meet emissions standards, but still sound like Concorde.

    • If you mean the joinery firm that made windows and doors, it closed down several years ago and a private house was built on the site.
    • I’ve been looking at their website from time to time over the last few years and I was sure that at least one loaf - the signature sourdough - is supplied by the BreadBread bakery who are at a lot of markets at weekends and who used to have a small cafe bakery shop in Brixton Market. I used to go there specifically to get their bread.   They are also affiliated with Franco Manca.  That was the first FM, co-founded by Bridget Hugo, who died last year. BreadBread also supplied the bread for the now closed Crooked Well pub restaurant (but now open under a different name - The Kerfield Arms)  in Grove Lane SE5.  Not sure where the pastries come from but it doesn’t seem possible to choose which ones to have delivered.  I do think they chop and change the suppliers from time to time.  I like the look of the (expensive) crullers they sometimes have plus granola, the savoury pastries and expensive bagels.  They frequently have special offers for a first delivery.  40% is the highest discount I’ve seen so far. I too would be worried about a fox being an opportunist.
    • Yes, they sound excellent.
    • Maybe the signor in question spotted some hot jacuzzi action and just had to stop in?
