Vickster
Folowing on from the "Why do people think they can say anything when you are pregnant' thread, I was discussing pregnancy and old wives tales with a friend recently, and all the nonsense people tell you as to whether they think you are having a girl or a boy. From my own experience, I carried my son low and out front, and did not have morning sickness - both classic 'having a boy' old wives tales. Here is a link to some classic old wives tales: linkWhat have others experiences been? Did any of this ring true, or were all your experiences the opposite of the old wives tales? Additionally, any ladies with one of each - were your pregnancies the same or different, and likewise those with two of the same? Moos
I was sick as a parrot, and carried a high, round bump. Everyone from the Eastern European Sainsbury's car cleaning guy to the guy in Starbucks to the cleaner at work to every bugger I saw on the street and had an opinion he couldn't keep to himself said 'Ooh, you're having a boy!'. The slight anti-climax to this story is that I did have a boy.. Vik
Old wives tales are a real bug-bear of mine! I have 2 boys and a girl and a mystery one on the way, I have carried exacly the same way each time, had identical pregnancies, not a day of morning sickness and lots of indigestion each time. EVERYONE has an opinion though, I tend to zone out when they start with the 'Ooh - it's a boy/girl' 'Ooh it'll have lots of hair' 'Ooh it'll be big/small' etc... sillywoman
Some midwives I know of think that if a woman has bad indigestion it's a sign that the baby will be born with lots of hair. We disproved that belief completely with number 2 child though. SteveT
There is a saying where I come from that "if you suffer from lots of indigestion during pregnancy", it meansyou will feel much better once the baby arrives! ClareC
I had indegestion and my daughter didn't have lots of hair.......I did however have horrendous back ache which I later found out is an indication of a posterior baby! Wish I knew that before I opted for a midwife led no drugs labour!!! Keef
Mrs Keef was told by a South African friend of ours that her arse wasn't fat, so she was having a boy.We had a girl, so either the friend was being kind, and her arse was indeed fat, or more likely, it's a complete load of bo!locks. Vickster
I tend to agree with it being a lod of old bo!locks, as even if correct, there is a 50/50 chance of it being right in any event! millsa
when I was 6 months pregnant with baby1, I was on holiday in Cape Town and met the head of the local maternity hospital at a party. He was convinced I was having a girl (bump reading). He said he has seen hundreds of bumps in his life and he has never been wrong. I did believe him because he was the head of maternity hospital...and I had a boy!I am now pregnant again and I am carrying exacly the same way this time, have so far had identical pregnancies, not a day of morning sickness and a lot of back pain. and we know it is a girl :) Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/11789-pregnancy-and-old-wives-tales/#findComment-333467 Share on other sites
