My only child is going to Uni in September. He will be living on the campus in self-catering accommodation in his first year. As I never went to Uni, what advice would you offer from your experiences?

Don't go for the student account that offers a free ipod or something, go for the one that will give you the best deal on your overdraft!

If you meet a scouse bird, you're probably in!

Uni doesn't take that much work, but try doing some.

Get a private rented student house with friends as soon as possible, as it will be a lot cheaper. Try to get some sort of balance between turning up a lectures & falling out of bars at three in the morning, university socialising is much more fun if you are actually doing some work during the day !

As long as he can heat beans, make toast, make pasta, and open a jar, he'll be fine.

Or pull a girl in an all girls hall, befriend her mates, and get fed regularly when you pop over to see her.

I wouldn?t worry about him not being able to cook. Men generally only learn how to cook properly when they are in their mid-twenties and realise what a useful seduction technique it is. Prior to that your body is specially adapted to living off things that come in cans and/or only need boiling.

I agree totally with Keef about the bank account.

Don't get into the habit of skipping lectures because you just end up not be able to be bothered to go to any at all.

Depending on what kind of area the campus is in - keep the windows shut.

Get involved in as much socially as possible, even if it's not really your thing. (Like fancy dress....never been a fan but it's all anyone seems to want to do when there's a party at Uni.) You can make some of the best mates you'll ever have whilst at Uni.

Try not to go and fall in love.....at least until towards the end.

But my number 1 advice would be DON'T GET A GIRLFRIEND until at least the final year.

And don't go anywhere too near to home - stay away. Don't come back too often. Get stuck in.
