Alan Dale
I need to find a mutually convenient location to drink with a mate from Crystal Palace.Which and where is the best pub in the area around the Southern End of Lordship Lane? Brendan
The Dulwich Wood House perhaps. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/1246-south-east-dulwich-pubs/#findComment-33165 Share on other sites
SeanMacGabhann
South End I would say either The Wood House (but that is KINDA out of the way for both parties)The Plough maybe? After that you are looking at Forest Hill. I quite like the Hob but tat is undergoing changes so can't say what the bar itself is like at the moIf you can make it to Forest Hill Rd easily then 2 buses from Crystal Palace serve the FHT, and The Herne Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/1246-south-east-dulwich-pubs/#findComment-33172 Share on other sites
Alan Dale
Thanks both.I need to get on a bus at Goose Green End. I think we will explore a few places over the coming months but the Plough seems like an ok place to start. Jeremy
What changes are happening at the Hob? I really like that place... probably more than most of the ED pubs. Keef
Or Sydenham is 1 bus each (176 for you, 122 or 202 for him). The pubs are either chavy (for want of a better word), or old school boozers, which I like, but not everyone does. Golden Lion would be my recommendation. SeanMacGabhann
Hi JeremyRon and Emma got fed up of being turfed out of the EDT and Mag with the comedy club so bought the Hob some while back with plans to convert the room upstairs to a proper theatre - posting on their website details below. I think the bar will be unaffected and they plan music sessions there as wellIt's close enough to me for me to consider it still part of LL anyway - :)-DHi folks. The comedy club has closed for the summer to allow the long awaited refurbishment to take place. We are hoping to reopen for the first weekend in October depending on the level of horror the builders uncover. It is, however, going to be seriously worth the wait with a gorgeous new bar, gleaming and plentiful new toilets upstairs and down, more seating, more tables, much more legroom and a ceiling that won't look as if it's about to fall down ....again! In the meantime we are planning a lot of live music and events, which you can keep track of below while the bar downstairs patiently waits it's turn to be prettified.. and prettified it will be! Have a look at the NEWS page of the website during the next few monthe to follow the progress and let us know what you think. We've already confirmed some great acts like Stewart Lee, Simon Munnery, Simon Bligh, Howard Read and Nick Wilty to name a few for October so come back and see us! Alan Dale
Thanks Keef. I will track the route of the 176 for the best spot. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/1246-south-east-dulwich-pubs/#findComment-33190 Share on other sites
Asset
I would have thought the Village might have been a more central destination. I know everyone on here is snobby of it but it's not so bad. The Dog's alright for a drink and you can have pizza too. SeanMacGabhann
Only thing I would really disagree with Asset is it being any closer to Crystal Palace than East Dulwich. I made same mistake with FHT & Herne really Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/1246-south-east-dulwich-pubs/#findComment-33304 Share on other sites
Alan Dale
I think that as the crow flies the village is equidistant between my place and his- but it's a bit tame/nice really. Not the right environment for two scally lads from Grimsby to get their beer on. Alan Dale
Think it's going to be the Plough- does the 176 go past the Plough? What about the 40? Keef
176, 40, 185 all stop opposite the library, just by The Plough. Good garden if either of you smoke! SeanMacGabhann
Two Scally Lads from Grimbsby? Smoke? There may be a William Hill a few doors down from The Plough but I can't see them offering any worthwhile odds Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/1246-south-east-dulwich-pubs/#findComment-33332 Share on other sites
Louisa
The Plough isnt a very fair half way spot between Goose Green and ED! I would have thought the Grove Tavern would be a more suitable in between place for a drink. SeanMacGabhann
If only it still existed eh?I actually thought the Harvester of about 5 years ago is better than it's current incarnation Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/1246-south-east-dulwich-pubs/#findComment-33348 Share on other sites
Louisa
Well the Harvester still carry the name, although I would never consider drinking in there myself. It still has a bar area I believe, and could be a decent walk up Cox Walk to the DWH. There's the gauntlet. Anyone? We will enjoy it, we have both given up smoking and I do all my gambling on Betfair these days. That's progress. Brendan
It depends on how many bars you want to visit and how much walking you want to do of course. To get a good cross section of the different kind of places in ED I would suggest EDT or the Bishop (you don?t need to do both) - Black Cherry ? Possibly the Palmeston - The Drum ? CPT ? Plough. Then you can make your way back down lordship lane to the station and take in all the ones you missed out on the way up. Tom
The Darmouth Arms in Forest Hill is excellent - and right by the station.Good food & beer, nice people - no garden as I recall.... mockney piers
having a few friends in crystal palace, your mate should be warned that the trains finish very early and buses are a reet pain.37 to herne hill and the thingy (5?) up to crystal palace being a good bet. (or get drunk, consequently lazy and get a cab, not a penny over 8 quid!!!) Alan Dale
He reckoned his last train is a quarter to twelve. Is that not the case?I won't tell him of the difficulties. He needs to experience them first hand to fully appreciate them..
