Does the Shawshank have a "twist"? Really?

I mean, it has a plot device that comes as a surprise but I'm not sure that's really a twist.

Does a twist not have to make you look at the whole film in a different light or from a different angle?

I don't mean to sound picky - more just exploring "twists" as rhetorical devices. Or just being a dick.

That's a good idea....any chance you could let Mr/Mrs/Ms Administrator know so they can put it into action. Best TQ

WARNING CONTAINS SPOILERS ON SEVEN AND SIXTH SENSE

...alright Tone?

Being a smartarse I said to my Girlfriend "he's a ghost" after 10 mins of Sixth Sense... she was not happy; and Seven, admittedly at the end, but as soon as I saw the delivery van coming it was bleedin' obvious surely?...so neither had a particular twist for me, though Seven's a good film nevertheless.

Thinking about it, Memento, a film which is basically nothing but twists, every scene making you look at all the previous ones in a new light, works rather well. The final scenes then are not so much 'i never saw that coming' as 'ooh what clever and satisfying film that was'.

No that's not alright.........you have alerted the reader of your post to expect a twist in Seven and Sixth Sense.

Lemme tell you a story. I used to finish work at around 3ish and used to go and watch afternoon movies in Leicester Square for all of 5 pounds. Remember those days anyone!

Anyway, I bought a ticket for Sixth Sense, walked into the auditorium....the action was rolling. I thought, no one told me it had already started. Watched for a few minutes, thought it was a bit intense and then the credits rolled up. I had rolled up for the ending....apparently one of the greatest twists ever.

The reason the twist is Seven is so good is that the studio deliberately made sure they kept Spacey's name off the credits....remember this film was released soon after the Usual Suspects. Gwyneth's head does not count as a twist.

It had no impact on me whatsoever.

Best TQ

Thing is with the likes of Usual Suspects and Seven is that they're well enough known. To say that anyone is giving away spoilers would be like suggesting giving away what happens to John Hurt in Alien is a spoiler. It's not really is it.

I'm also finally on Keef's side that The Wire is pretty much out there now too and we should be a bit less sensitive about it.

Moon however is under appreciated and regards that I shall stay completely shtum except to say it's not a classic rentatwist in the ending at all is it. Very good though, reminiscent of the sort of films made in the heyday of cinema that was the seventies.

    • The young ones can bite car tyres around this time of year - I assume they do it for the thrill of the hiss or something like that.  We had a spate of damaged tyres and thought it was a disturbed person or at a stretch an environmental protestor taking it too far, but caught a fox on a house camera.
    • Although this sounds worrying, a "bitey" fox is unusual. I see foxes all the time where I live near Rye Lane and have never experienced this. I've even seen a fox sitting in the garden where an outdoor cat lives, whilst the cat was there - the cat was fine and is still alive. I think my flat is on a fox path because I hear and see them most nights, none of the local cats seem bothered by them. I can't help but wonder what would make the fox act in such a way, I've just read that toxoplasmosis might make them more aggressive

    • Thanks Sue.  No the car just drove on.  We don't know if they noticed.  We were driving behind.  We were just glad we could be with the cat, and take him to the vet, rather than leaving him there 😞
