Well the one Greek Restaurant we did have did not survive but that was an unmentionable chain.

I believe there is a long term Greek place in Camberwell if it's still there.?

Dont think that is a chain.

Well on a visit to Jaflong before they moved.. I mentioned that the meal I was eating was NOT cooked by the usual Chef.

They replied he was off and indeed it had been cooked by a different chef.

So be careful before you make any bets. Could prove expensive. :)

Because of course people who eat burgers and pizza wouldn't ever eat any other kind of food. Unlike the guy who eats curry five times a week, whose tastes are many and varied.

I no longer eat Curry 5 times a week.. Can longer afford to. I cook a variety of good food at home..

My worst UK restaurant meal by a long way was at a branch of the Real Greek. It's Peckham that gets all the interesting openings these days; it's just chains and more fast food for ED. Ah well, the walk back from SE15 helps the digestion.

Curry sauce does not make sense..

Curry was adopted and anglicised from the Tamil word kari (கறி) meaning "sauce",

So Sauce sauce..

Now I believed the deal was done and dusted. So now I don't know. ???

Most of the staff have moved to the new place.. The staff at the old Jaflong are new(ish) including the Chef.

Apart from the owner's wife who is waiting tables and taking telephone orders.

New Jaflong on ED Road is a soulless dining experience,

Not remotely cosy or welcoming, nor have they tried to lure the young'uns by updating the place and giving it a minimalist signage, as opposed to the ugly discount takeaway billboard thing.

Really? If made properly from scratch with no cheats, I think burgers and pizzas require more skill.

I agree. I can cook a decent curry, if I do say so myself. A crispy, traditionally-made sourdough pizza is much harder to achieve. Hence why people tend to buy them in.

Sourdough starters are difficult if no impractical to make at home in small batches.

But one you have your starter in large batches they will last for years when 'fed' the rest is simple.

Most Pizza palaces do not use a Sourdough base.

No doubt if The Real Greek does eventually replace the Old Jaflong you will be the first to comment on

the merits of a genuine Stifado.. :)

Oh blimey, once I went to a restaurant in Crete, owned in part by a family from Yorkshire

The daughters husband was Greek, though that nite her father was on the floor and serving tables

"Can I ask what the beef Stifado is" I enquired

"Aye, thas beef lumps wit gravy" came the reply in a pure Sheffield twang.

It's been a favourite of mine ever since.

We went to the new Jaflong yesterday and had the Sunday buffet.

Sadly, it was very disappointing. Bland food and bland decor. Apart from the salad, the food looked and tasted as if it had been sitting around for hours. As we were the only people there when we arrived, it probably had. I wouldn't have minded that if it had tasted of anything, but it didn't much.

I once had a very poor Sunday buffet at the old Jaflong, so perhaps they still have the same chef on a Sunday?

Also the service was not exactly attentive. We knew it was BYOB but did not bring any alcohol as we would have had soft drinks. However nobody asked us at any stage if we wanted anything to drink. Yes we could have found someone and asked ourselves, but we shouldn't have had to.

Oh well. What an opportunity lost. Yet another run of the mill "curry house" to join the many others in the area, and with no atmosphere whatsoever.

I wish them well, but I shan't be back.
