Marmora Club

Hi there I don't know if any local historians can help me...I have recently come into the possession of a walking stick which was my Great Grand fathers. His name was George Young and he lived at 25, Marmora Road from the early 1900's to the Early 1920's. On the walking stick is engraved "Presented by the Marmora club 25th April 1914" I was wondering if anyone may know what the Marmora club was, as I am intrigued as to where the walking stick came from.

perhaps the Aquarius Golf Club , right at the end of Marmora Road .

Just found that Aquarius Golf Club wasn't opened until 1923. How intriguing.

Could it be a war veterans group from the Crimean war?

But as he lived in Marmora Rd, maybe it was just a casual walking group of neighbours?

There's also the chap that has written a book about East Dulwich that references all the street names - he may know something.The book is usually on sale in Cheners.

I'd check out whether the armed merchant cruiser HMS Marmora was built before 26 (sic) April 1914 if only to eliminate this possible connection.

Why dodn't you go along to the Southwark Local History Library on Borough High Street behind John Harvard Library.

I'm sure they'd be delighted to give some steers where you might look in their archives to track this club down.
