What's the quickest (and least changes) way to get to Brighton in the evening from any of the local stations? I've been on the trainline website and it's not that helpful. Forest Hill to Brighton seems the quickest but have to change twice. Isn't there anywhere that goes straight to East Croydon?

I'd say FH to East Croydon, as already stated, or, if it's convenient for you, catch the 197 to East Croydon. It stops opposite East Croydon station and should be quite quick in the evening. Savs you going to FH.

I often travel from ED to the south coast and I've found this website easily the best :- http://www.southernrailway.com/. Also if you register with them you can often pick up tickets in advance for a lot less than paying on the day. e.g. ?3.75 single - you normally need to reserve a place on a specific train for the best discounts. Also when you pay by card online you get a reference number and can collect the tickets from Southern Railways ticket machines.

P.S!!! I should add that it seems best to start your journey to Brighton (BTN) from Victoria (VIC) or possibly East Croydon (ECR) to get the cheapest fares. If you start from Forest Hill (FOH) or East Dulwich (EDW) the prices generally seem higher.

    • Ha ha that's hilarious - how wonderfully embarrassing for Reform!
    • Closing down completely. The lovely people there are all retiring. Thanks, but Deptford is a long way to go to make two journeys to  take and collect a car! Do they not do even relatively minor repairs if it fails its MOT first time? Then that would require four journeys 😭 Wondering if there's already a thread on here for garage recommendations? People on my road WhatsApp group have recommended some local ones. I'm particularly gutted because apart from the lovely people who worked there,  Dell was a five minute walk for me!
    • I did think that might be the reason, but five years out of seven it's going to be a weekday (I think. Not sure how leap years might affect things!)
    • Probably because the 5th was a weekday. We still have the weekend to come. Also, some fireworks going off nearly every night for the last few months. Last night something was being let off that made a very deep booming noise every 10 seconds or so. That said, if the general public are beginning to see the harm done by firework noise and choosing to use low noise options and refusing to support organised events that still use the full throttle type, I for one would be very happy. Does anyone know if the Herne Hill Velodrome Halloween fireworks event used low noise options?
