Yah well hmmm... if you're on a ?5 or bust budget, then it's great (I went today). But it's pretty chatty/basic. However, it is I discovered 'the oldest independent cinema' in the county.

Peckham Plex is great - you can stick EDPH up your jacksy. And for once I am being serious.

Ok but yes and all that. It's nice enough and I'd go again, but its quite pared back as you'd expect for a ?5

And the pop corn sticks to you clothes.

And the people behind and in front chatted throughout the film

So if you go into the Plex expecting all of this I am sure you will get it.

I am always pleasantly surprised although I do go to some of the less popular stuff. At the end of the run.

I suggest that the Plex puts a sign up saying "no East Dulwich snobs"

I've just been reading all the Irvine Welsh books and am 3/4 of the way through Porno. So I won't go and see it until I've finished the book. I'm particularly interested in how the film deals with poor Juice Terry's little 'accident' and who on earth could they have cast for Curtis?

I'm going to go along out of nostalgia but like seeing the Happy Mondays a couple of years ago I think it'll disappoint - that's the general view of the reviews i've read. Still looking forward to it though. Read the book just after it was published so was a bit snotty about the sudden rise of Welsh and Train spotting when the film came out. Welsh is of course a solid West Ham fan (goes quite a lot) and the ICF feature in one of his sequels (none of which i've rated to be honest)

I believe local heroes Fat White Family's Whitest Boy On The Beach plays as the credits role, which is a good thing as they might now be able to afford somewhere permanent to live instead living in squats or crashing on other people's sofas. They could certainly use the money.

Apart from price, the EDPH is far superior. Screen, ambience, seating, just about everything is nicer. But there's a price premium on that obviously.

Personally I found a lot of cinemas to be soulless spaces - and that feeling about other cinemas is heightened since EDPH opened. Its not a snobbish thing - its just a much nicer place to spend time.

    • We were hoping to have a meal at Monkatsu  last night (Sunday), after having been out all day. Online information gave the closing time as 10pm. We got there around 8.30pm and they wouldn't give us a table because "the kitchen closes in half an hour." Surely it doesn't take half an hour to make a meal? We've never had to wait that long when we've eaten there before. Has anybody else had this happen? We ended up going home and getting a delivery, which wasn't how we had envisaged the end of a nice day 🙄
    • That place did only have pizzas on the menu, to the best of my recollection. We ate there once, the pizzas were ok but the room was not exactly atmospheric. Il Mirto has  a lot of pasta dishes on the menu,  but that also never seems busy. It's small and out of the way,  and easily forgotten if you're looking for somewhere to eat, I suppose.
