Hi, just a mild dispute going on in the Ofski household right now!

With the new Costa about to appear in Peckham, I said that there was another one before it, but I can't back this up with where or when and my wife swears there wasn't!

Long story short, can anyone confirm if there was a Costa coffee shop in Peckham before? (apparently petrol station ones don't count!)

There's a coffee resting on the outcome of this, though, rest assured we will both be claiming from an independent! ;-)

No NO Costa!

There was a Boots, C&A, Marks and Spencer, Sainsbury's, BHS, Times furniture, Fads decorating, Jones and Higgins Department Store, Red Records, Ravels Shoes, Zodiac Toys .... those were the days. Christmas shopping in peckham.

There are two/three fewer indie coffee shops/cafes now. Corals (was Lerryns) has closed, as has Baba juice and, soon, Cafe Viva.

The chap who rounds Dewdrop - the little van under Peckham Arch - says his trade has improved since Costa opened, as more people now see he is there.

He's got a good imagination then, because it's not open yet!

When I was last in Portugal I went to a small independent cafe and had the best coffee (no sugar or milk needed). I was so impressed, I attempted the same thing at a few of these chains and was left very disappointed. More expensive, and not even close when it came to quality and flavour. My biggest issue with coffee here is the bitterness, something I've never experienced abroad.

Cafe Viva had an announcement that the owner was leaving the area

This, exactly. It varies so much from branch to branch. The one in the Imax Waterloo is generally good. The one in Camberwell is terrible (at least last time I visited them, which was a while ago admittedly, so could have changed).

I heard that Daily Goods is opening a new branch in Elephant & Castle - that's got to be a sign of changing times.

    • I totally agree it just seems that it a thing nowadays.  It must be due to how fireworks are sold.

    • If it was limited to a couple of days a year, so we all knew, that would be fine. In the last few years (and it is a recent thing) you get random fireworks going off any time after dusk for half the year. It does more than cause problems for pets and wildlife- it can mean lasting damage and massive expense and hassle for pet owners. All because some get a buzz out of loud bangs.
    • Ohh dear.  Fireworks can be great fun.  Where I used to live the kids would have firework wars/games.  Watching them was more enjoyable than watching  TV. (Which you could hardly hear due to the pops and bangs).  It's not like anyone/anything could stop them. I would still prefer organised public displays that are affordable.   And I agree that fireworks cause problems for wild life, pets and people.   It seems to be one of those things that just happens so we have to put up with it.  But it is still not as problematic here as in other areas in London - that's for sure.
