Anyone else experienced this recently? I seem to remember that there was a thread about someone doing it and then taking money in advance and disappearing. This guy said that he 'was doing a neighbour's house' and wondered if I wanted mine done. Conversation conducted through the door. Doesn't sound kosher to me. Don't have a description unfortunately.
I didn't open the door or ask him to do the windows so no mention of money was made. He did say to contact him if I wanted him to do them and I said OK put your card through the door but he didn't which makes me think he was trying it on. We've had at least 4 burglaries in this road in the last 10 days.
In a similar vein, I was recently approached by a man wanting to know whether I would like regular deliveries of some sort of white liquid in a bottle, in exchange for cash. Apparently, he could also get me 'eggs' and 'juice' if I wanted them (obviously some code for drug-related paraphernelia I shouldn't wonder!). I slammed the door in his face and called the police, who were less than helpful. Be on your guard if you see this man. He drives a slow-moving electric vehicle with crates stacked on the back, and he seems to tour the area in the early mornings.

This is a con man.

There are several threads about him. He told me the flat above were having there's done, so I agreed to have mine done as well. Paid him, because he was vey personable and I didnt feel any reason to doubt him. He said he would just get the ladders. Never saw him again.

You were right to turn him away. Never pay in advance. It taught me a rather embarrassing lesson.

In 2010? I don't believe you!

(Mind you, I've never up early enough to have seen such a fellow, anyway.)

But seriously Cate, you never even found out if he was a 'con-man'?

You didn't even open the door...

Sure, i & other know of the ones how do ask for cash up front and i agree they are not to be trusted.

But you're just adding 2 + 1 and getting 37???

He said he would put his card through the door and he didn't. He didn't say he didn't have any cards on him and so would come back and drop it through the door. I have dealt with quite a few window cleaners in the past and none of them get work by knocking on doors and touting for business. They come on recommendation.

Cate,

Funnily enough, I did once have a job as a stand-up, though it didn't last long as I would get to the end of a joke and then I could never remember the, erm .... no, it 's gone.

Now I'm forced to live a hand-to-mouth existence and eke out a living where I can.

Let me know if you ever need your windows cleaning, or I'm a dab hand at tarmacing (spelling?) drives or replacing loose tiles (special rates for OAPs and the vulnerable).

That's because you don't open the door when they knock.

Will he be happy to converse through the letterbox - or does he prefer face-to-face communication?

Came to our house too and tried to be quite persuasive. Said that some flats were having theirs done. We said that we didn't have any cash in the house and he said he would take whatever we had. He asked if he could step in while he waited. Be very careful, he is very charming but forceful in his speech and does not want to take no for an answer!

    • I highly recommend Temi as a very skilled and reliable painter / decorator based in the East Dulwich & SE London area. She has completed many jobs for us over the past 10 years at our property on Overhill Road SE22 and also on Harlescott Road SE15, and we have always been thoroughly impressed with her work. We often leave her with keys and leave her to work her magic, fully confident that she's 100% trustworthy and will always do a fantastic job. If you're looking for a trustworthy local decorator who delivers exceptional work Temi is a great person to call. I'm not affiliated with her or her business in any way and actually found her through a recommendation on the ED forum over 10 years ago, i just like to recommend really good tradespeople who deserve a thank you. • ''He caused chaos  in this country with his put down of everything British and his many dismal words about the effects of Brexit on this country.'' What utter tosh. Carney had to mitigate the effects of Brexit caused by plastic patriots like Farage. For example, immediately after the 2016 Brexit vote the BoE had to intervene fiscally by dropping interest rates and increasing QE in order to prevent the economy from taking a big hit.  They were unable to prevent the £ from crashing at the time, and it has since been worked out that the effect of that alone caused a circa £900/year hit to each UK household, which equates to the UK @ £450m/week.   There's reams of data out there that shows the economic damage Brexit has caused to the UK. Here's one looking at business investment, admittedly not very sexy but kinda important if you want to achieve economic growth. It's clear to see that prior to 2016 we had reached parity with some of our main rivals, but since then we've flatlined. All that Brexit has achieved is to win the race to the bottom. There's a reason why Farage never brought up Brexit at the last election, he knows himself it hasn't delivered on any of the promises, quite the reverse in fact.  Labour, stupidly, by saying they can make Brexit work have in effect given Farage a Get Out of Jail Free card...
