peckhamboy
Did anyone go to the farmers' market in Peckham at the weekend? And was it any good, ie choice, price etc? It's the sort of thing I would like to see on Goose Green occasionally - I know we've got some good shops already, and the Northcross Rd market, but I don't think a farmers' market would necessarily be direct competition. SimonM
Are you aware of the Farmers' Market held on the 4th Sunday of (almost) every month in the forecourt of Dulwich College? 9-ipm I think Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/1450-farmers-market-in-peckham/#findComment-39413 Share on other sites
Louisa
I'd rather go to the college one than risk my valuables going to the one in Peckham. :) Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/1450-farmers-market-in-peckham/#findComment-39481 Share on other sites
nancysmum
I have a friend of mine who uses the peckham market and says that he gets some great deals if he goes towards the end of the session. I've not used it though so can't comment first hand. downsouth
Been to both. I used to live in Peckham for a while. If you get there early it is really good. best not to go late! Dulwich is not great at all really, just a nice venue but I like my cheeses and beer and never find myself that tempted. Louisa
it's the same farmers market isnt it? Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/1450-farmers-market-in-peckham/#findComment-39552 Share on other sites
downsouth
I don't think so. Peckham has some nice cakes from a guy that goes to Borough, not seen him at Dul College. Louisa
I dont need to scaremonger about Peckham bald marauder - I think most forumites know what a dump the place is! :) Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/1450-farmers-market-in-peckham/#findComment-39577 Share on other sites
downsouth
Peckham certainly has a lot of challenges but not all of it is bad (Bellenden end). As I said go nice and early to the market and you'll be fine. If you live in London you should be able to negotiate your way around. Louisa
Do they sell ham and deli style meats ? I love my lincolnshire sausages too. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/1450-farmers-market-in-peckham/#findComment-39594 Share on other sites
Mellors
I was there on Sunday for the first time and was really impressed. Nice fruit and veg at decent prices (with knowledgeable growers selling themselves, not weekend staff), and got some lovely ham and a brace of partridge. Cheap as well. And reasonably quiet which is more than you can say for Borough Market. Handy to nip up and get your shopping, but not a "destination" day out like Borough. downsouth
Yep last time I went but was a couple of years ago now. Maybe someone who has been more recently can confirm. Peckhamgatecrasher
Louisa - I would have thought an old timer like you would be wedded to Kennedys for yer Lincs Links. Michael Palaeologus
Personally, I would never buy a farmer from a market. You never know where they have been.Far better to go into the countryside and pick your own.I have a number in my freezer. ChavWivaLawDegree
I'm lucky I have no valuables to get lost, so feel free to wander the scary streets of Peckham whenever I please and I like the fact that if I buy from a producer in the Peckham Farmers Market (which I haven't done for a little while - too broke) it's about 30% less than when the same producer sells the same goods in Borough, Victoria or other farmer's markets. I love this aspect of shopping in Peckham! Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/1450-farmers-market-in-peckham/#findComment-40682 Share on other sites
Nero
The one at Dulwich College is good, but I wonder too whether there is price inflation at such places. Even amongst the suppliers there the prices vary. I wander around then buy. Louisa
Does the Peckham or DC market have a Duchy of Cornwall stall selling products from the cornish estate? peckhamboy
I doubt it - I thought the point of farmers' markets was that everything had to be grown/produced within 30 miles? Thanks for all the info and views btw. Will definitely try to get down to one or t'other next time they're on. I'd still like to have one on Goose Green though...If anyone is interested, I found some info on the peckham market here, including a list of producers. I'm sure DC is on there as well. lozzyloz
I was down the farmers market in Brixton and I believe all their gear is imported. peckhamboy
Actually, I couldn't find reference to DC or Brixton on that site, which suggests that they may not be "certified" markets, i.e. no restrictions on what is sold, where it comes from etc. Which doesn't necessarily mean they're not worth going to of course but bear in mind it may be less "local" produce.
