There is a nasty undercurrent of snobbery which surfaces quite frequently. No I don't shop in Mark One but there are some people who perhaps can't afford all the thing s going on on LL. There a people on tighter budgets, lower wages etc... Why does everyone seem to think LL is some middle class utopia - it isn't. There were plenty of people who lived here before the newbies arrived and the very well will be there once the trendy newbies have had enough of the inner city so yes they should be catered for too. It's called diversity.

The problem isn't to do with the content of the store, not who will or will not shop there. The problem is that it will open the floodgates to every other 100+ stores chains.


Do we really want a LL packed with the likes of Snappy Snaps, Superdrug, Carphone Warehouse, Hallmark Cards or KFC?

Totally agree with this, dont know where it comes from and to be honest i'm getting quite sick of it.(6)

Born in the local hospital, went to the local schools, worked in the local shops. Lived in Clapham for 5 years and came back "home" and even the clhamites werent this far up themselves.

The fact is that no independent reatiler has come to LL to sell affordable items they are marketed at a particular segment and yes I like and buy a lot of this but how about everyone who doesn't like/can't buy these sorts of things. Where do they go? Down to Peckham or Camberwell? Should they have to? A good highstreet is a mixture. The fllodgaes argument is scaremongering. There is enough civic pride and monitoring by floks here and elsewhere to resist an identiki make up of the street but at the moment it is turning into a playground for those who can afford and that's not something that sits well with me.

Agree with kford. I don't want a bland high street with identikit features. Yes, there are some 'posh' places on LL, but there are also 'normal' places like bookies' yards, grocery shops, chemists, card shops, fast food places, newsagents and curry houses. In fact the 'normal' stuff outweighs the chintz and high-end, I reckon. Nero

I was brought up in SW9 and went to the local schools there and bought here in 1993 but I have seen what can happen when you do get the down market shops in these areas.


I am not a snob and I certainly do not earn the TV producer and hedge funds wages earned in this area but I and others like me in the area also like the nice shops that have come into the area.


They would be stupid if they didn't use their business sense to exploit the middle classes with their masses of diposable income.

Nope! Dont get me wrong i'm all for change. I was a avid support of "get the Dull-out-of-Dulwich". But when people start making stupid comments it gets my back up.

That's not fair, Android didn't start turning this thread in to the same old same old. Also, it's unwise to dismiss a debate that keeps arising, because things keep arising for a reaon. Better to address them I think.


Anyway, I for one would really like to see some nice big chain shops on LL. Not snappysnaps and superdrub, and definitely not KFC (Because Favourite Fried Chicken is better ;-) ), but some nice not too flash, not too shabby shops.


Food wise, I wouldn't mind a Subway!!! Agood electrical shop would be good too.


But there is room for both chain and small businesses, both offering things that the other doesn't.

This is a nice debate

KEEF expanded on what I am trying to get across....a healthy balance....Nobody wants to see a shoddy shop front and it helps if we are honest with what certain shops will attract. I know it may not be very PC but just look at the state of Camberwell around the Mcdonalds......It was never as bad as that 15 years ago.

I worked round there 15 years ago, and I can confirm that, yes, it was that bad.

      I’ve tried to find details of surgeries being held before but not found any. The section of the Southwark website that details councillors’ surgeries says that: Your locally elected Councillors will be holding a roving surgery programme in the Dulwich Hill area to enable residents to raise any local issues. Residents will be notified by letter in advance of the date, time and specific streets/roads where the surgery will take place.  Surgeries are not held in August, on Bank Holidays, Easter or in Christmas Week.  Dulwich Hill Ward Councillors I’ve never seen any notification of surgeries being held, including on the DH councillors’ social media accounts. I don’t know if any other residents of Dulwich Hill have? Neighbouring wards all seem to have times and places posted for surgeries.

      I wouldn't feel too bad about that. It's one of the few degree areas that you can do a BA or a BSc in, so it's a fairly wide-ranging and complex subject. Certainly Truss, Kwasi and Reeves seem to struggle with it.

      I can't access the article - what's the gist?  I took the markets getting jittery when she was crying at PMQs to be a sign that they trusted her. But maybe it was because they were simply worried about any form of instability.  The NIC hikes have stymied the economy, which we could all see a mile off. Will a wealth tax improve things? Does anyone here think the trickle down has any impact and that chasing out the super rich will help things? Or are we just seeing off the biggest contributors to the economy? And has the Kwasi approach ever worked anywhere else?  Economics is not my strong point at all, I'd love to know others' opinions, but it seems to be she has few options, especially as the party is so divided.

      does either of them have a surgery? probably not over summer, but I thought they had to give the opportunity for their constituents to meet them.
