Pheobe
I've just posted in the business section asking for recommendations for a personal trainer - but I thought I would post here too to see what people think about me trying to go from not being able to run for 2 minutes straight to me running a 10k, in 6 months? Easy or insane? Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/14515-10k-run/ Share on other sites
Narnia
Easy Phobe, not mad at all. I'm over 50 and I could do it in 6 months no bother. Doesn't mean you're not insane, as who can judge that?PS I'd have to set out soon though. Narnia
Sorry Phobe. You will get more sensible answers soon I'm sure. I just realised you hadn't posted before. Pheobe
Thanks, I didn't mind at all - I actually thought your response was quite sensible (covering all angles of my question)! One vote counted for easy and not insane! Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/14515-10k-run/#findComment-386555 Share on other sites
Narnia
Yeah well I was sort of allowing for 6 months to complete it. Can you run for two minutes crooked? It would be a start! amyw
hi pheobe, one of the forum posters runs a running course - there is one starting in january. i am planning on doing the 10k course but if you havent done any running yet you could start with the beginners (5k) one. you can definitely get uo to 10k in 6 months. dita-on-tees
I did it. so I started from being able to run for 5 mins, and then just kept upping it bit by bit. aim to run for five k and dont worry if its a mix of walking and running, it takes a while to get fitness levels up. and make yourself a ipod tune list (if you run the same route with the same play list you can measure how youre doing with where you are when a certain song comes on. I did my first 10 k this year, the adrenaline gives you a bit of a boost, its amazing feeling and when i finished i cried like a big girl. I didnt use a personal trainer as I am way to tight but lots of people like the additional discipline.good luck! dita-on-tees
oh I also found that doing another sport once I felt confident enough also really helped (running can get dull) so started playing football - this helped my fitness immensely. felt-tip
absolutely no problem. I went from not being able to run for 2 mins straight to doing the London Marathon in 4 months. running is actually very easy once you get started. running quickly is the hard bit. Peckhamgatecrasher
As a confirmed sprinter, I have to disagree with all of the above. Anything over 200m is a bad thing. But good luck anyhoo! jollybaby
Definitely - I managed a 10k with hardly any training to impress Mr JB - I think the key is keeping a really slow pace, much slower than you'd think. Best of luck.(This is from the girl who pulled out of the 800m at school after 1 lap!) Applespider
Look up the 'Couch to 5K' courses to start with and don't skimp on the early stuff. It's tempting sometimes to skip the odd break and push yourself for an extra few minutes in the early stages since you feel OK. Don't do it... it's those early low intensity stints that get your heart fit and lay the foundations for comfortable running later. I'm speaking from experience having done it both the wrong way and the right way.10K is a lovely distance... do-able in an hour for most people so training doesn't take shedloads of time out of your week and it's quite a relaxing distance. annaj
I have, very nearly, done exactly that. Started running in May and should be up to 10k on my long run in a couple of weeks.
