My laptop has suddenly stopped recognising my iphone after 6 months, the message I get is replace the device has anyone had this happen and what did they do?

Maybe it has been infected with the Android virus ;-)

Try it in a different USB port? Try something else in that USB port? If you've got access to any other iPod/iPhone, try that one or a different USB/iPod cable? That way, you should be able to rule out whether it's the laptop or the iPhone or the cable that has the problem.

First off, you have tried the initial old standby of helpdesks everywhere, restarting the laptop?

Happened to me. Uninstall And reinstall iTunes was the only way.

Thanks for this did try plugging out battery off and no joy. Not very technically minded so may seem dumb question if I uninstall itunes will I lose everything on it?

No, don't worry about that, the registry will be fine as will most of the relevant files.

If in doubt back up to an external hard drive first.

if only the tones for text alerts could be sorted as easily, surely apple must know by now how irratating it is to only have barely audible tones for texts and send out some kind of update software to allow the change of text alerts to be changed like the ringing alerts can.

Thanks for tips so far,did the install uninstall itunes no joy. Think it's something to do with the phone as ordinary ipod is working fine in the usb with the same cable so not the cable or computer. Did reset on phone no joy any more ideas gratefully received.

as there seems to be a degree of expertise out there, does anyone have any idea why I can't synchronise my windows calender with my ipod touch? It says it is synchronising but doesn't. No probkem with anything else, contacts etc.

Did your phone go through a iOS update on your iphone immediately before the phone ceased to work on the laptop or go through an upgrade to the latest version of itunes on the computer, What version are you using now of itunes?

What phone model are you using 2G, 3GS, or 4G? and what version?

What is the operating system that you're using on the computer and is it a MAC or a PC?

Does you iphone work otherwise, make calls etc normally?

Oh by the way, when uninstalling reinstalling you have to uninstall iTunes first, then get rid of all related components in the add remove programs, especially mobile updated or some such, before reinstalling.

Sorry, forgot to mention that.

does anyone know if there is an easy way to get at least one added text alert without jail breaking etc as l am sick of missing texts from people and getting the info too late.

What model are you using?

I am using the iphone4 and have updated to iOS 4.2 Beta.

It seems that they have added 17 new longer SMS alerts as well as additional features including assigning individual ringtones, sadly still no option to make a custom sms alert as yet.

I have been trying to find an application at least that will enable us to do so to no avail.

Yet of course we could add custom tones if we were to jailbreak!

Hopefully Apple will get moving on making the feature available soon.

sadly l only have the iphone 3gs at the moment and the loudest alert is the horn and thats next to useless :-(
