I wish I could recommend Final Fantasy XIII to you Keef as I?ve been playing them since the mid-90s and was really looking forward to the first one of this generation ? but I can?t. Epic production values can?t hid a very linear RPG experience. There is a bit which opens out and makes you go wow and the combat evolves into something quite nice but ultimately it?s a bit flat

Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas both use the oblivion engine but some people really don?t like the scary grey world compared to Oblivion?s trees?n?fields

Some people love the Mass Effect RPGs ? depends on your tolerance for sci-fi

Dragon Age is another Bioware epic ? people who love it love it but has mixed reviews

Two Worlds was an early Oblivion clone which was a bit of a disaster but the sequel is due and looks like it could be worth watching

GTA IV on it?s own is a hefty slice of gaming ? I haven?t finished it. The 2 episodes are quite different in tone (and fun) but I haven?t bought them and won?t until I finish the main game (they come up as cheap deals every so often anyway)

Assasins Creed 2 I haven?t played but I don?t know a soul who says it isn?t excellent

First one was rechristened by ZP as "faffing about creed". Second one was supposed to be getting there in removing some ofnthe repetition and tedious travelling.

3rd one is supposed to have finally got the balance spot on. I reckon I'll wait for a price drop before I invest though.

Red Dead Redemption is really fantastic - if you liked Oblivion (my all time fave, along with the Mass Effect series) then you will definitely enjoy this. The environment is huge and really beautifully created and the soundtrack was great. I would definitely recommend.

I'm a bit of an achievement whore and will always aim to get 100% completion on games like this. It was tough but managed it about 2 weeks ago and it was hugely satisfying :-)

I dunno Piers - from everyone I know Assasins Creed II completely overhauled the faffing about from they didn't just make it a bit better, they seem to have nailed it. This latest brotherhood installment is meant to be excellent but some think it's a small step backwards and other think it improves on II

But II >> I by some distance

Still it's all Pinball FX2 and Kinect Sports round mine at the mo so what do I know

The video review I watched said it had solved the issues of the first game, and that Brotherhood sort of continued where 2 left off. Anyway, ordered AC2, and GTA4 both now in the classics range at around a tenner, and ordered RDR for about 23 quid, which seemed okay. Should keep me going, especially with downloadable add-ons!

Keef - I have a PS3 copy of Red Dead Redemption which I can loan or swap for something else.

I didn't like it, but then I have never got into any RPG - Zelda, GTA, Red Dead I've tried quite a few.

As for black ops there is sooo much variety playing online. The stealth and tension in a search and destroy map is a vastly different experience to a free-for-all on a small map.

I've even got the Wife playing split screen zombies.

Lost cause paragon, lord knows I've tried.

Kerf, I tend to RPG on PC. Lord of the rings online has gone to free to play recently and sucked a few hoursmof my time, and can run ok on a laptop, though it does benefit from being on a nice graphics card.

All the old planescape torment, ice wind dale and baldurs gate games are great and a graphically very simple, just masses of stuff to expel and a billion quests.

  • 2 weeks later...

Limbo finished. So short, so wonderful.

Keef, I'm playing Call of Cthulhu on PC, it was only a fiver from steam or I'm sure you can pick up a second hand xbox copy from game, and I keep thinking of you. I reckon you'd love it.

Lots of occult, and strange gods and cultists and madness and stuff and a great atmosphere.

Plus if anyones a Lovecraft fan, you actually get to wander around Innsmouth. Coooool

I?ve heard similar about Harms Way so I?ll have a peek at that at some point ? possible 11am ish session there if you are free Piers

The last few puzzles in Limbo play quite differently to the early stuff but then as you realise you have come to the end ? so, so good. A real surprise in 2010

Captain S ? I never quite got the last couple of Resi games ? 5 in particular I was looking forward to (first on this gen) but it didn?t feel right to me so I never bought into them. For me, zombie multiplayer fun is ALL about the Left for Dead games

Keef: If I hadn?t played the 3 games you have just bought and still had them ahead of me I?d be soo excited. Danger is that one of them won?t grab you in comparison to the other two, which would be a shame. You lucky bugger tho

    • I've never got Christmas pudding. The only times I've managed to make it vaguely acceptable to people is thus: Buy a really tiny one when it's remaindered in Tesco's. They confound carbon dating, so the yellow labelled stuff at 75% off on Boxing Day will keep you going for years. Chop it up and soak it in Stones Ginger Wine and left over Scotch. Mix it in with a decent vanilla ice cream. It's like a festive Rum 'n' Raisin. Or: Stick a couple in a demijohn of Aldi vodka and serve it to guests, accompanied by 'The Party's Over' by Johnny Mathis when people simply won't leave your flat.
    • Not miserable at all! I feel the same and also want to complain to the council but not sure who or where best to aim it at? I have flagged it with our local MP and one Southwark councillor previously but only verbally when discussing other things and didn’t get anywhere other than them agreeing it was very frustrating etc. but would love to do something on paper. I think they’ve been pretty much every night for the last couple of weeks and my cat is hating it! As am I !
    • That is also a Young's pub, like The Cherry Tree. However fantastic the menu looks, you might want to ask exactly who will cook the food on the day, and how. Also, if  there is Christmas pudding on the menu, you might want to ask how that will be cooked, and whether it will look and/or taste anything like the Christmas puddings you have had in the past.
    • This reminds me of a situation a few years ago when a mate's Dad was coming down and fancied Franklin's for Christmas Day. He'd been there once, in September, and loved it. Obviously, they're far too tuned in to do it, so having looked around, £100 per head was pretty standard for fairly average pubs around here. That is ridiculous. I'd go with Penguin's idea; one of the best Christmas Day lunches I've ever had was at the Lahore Kebab House in Whitechapel. And it was BYO. After a couple of Guinness outside Franklin's, we decided £100 for four people was the absolute maximum, but it had to be done in the style of Franklin's and sourced within walking distance of The Gowlett. All the supermarkets knock themselves out on veg as a loss leader - particularly anything festive - and the Afghani lads on Rye Lane are brilliant for more esoteric stuff and spices, so it really doesn't need to be pricey. Here's what we came up with. It was considerably less than £100 for four. Bread & Butter (Lidl & Lurpak on offer at Iceland) Mersea Oysters (Sopers) Parsnip & Potato Soup ( I think they were both less than 20 pence a kilo at Morrisons) Smoked mackerel, Jerseys, watercress & radish (Sopers) Rolled turkey breast joint (£7.95 from Iceland) Roast Duck (two for £12 at Lidl) Mash  Carrots, star anise, butter emulsion. Stir-fried Brussels, bacon, chestnuts and Worcestershire sauce.(Lidl) Clementine and limoncello granita (all from Lidl) Stollen (Lidl) Stichelton, Cornish Cruncher, Stinking Bishop. (Marks & Sparks) There was a couple of lessons to learn: Don't freeze mash. It breaks down the cellular structure and ends up more like a French pomme purée. I renamed it 'Pomme Mikael Silvestre' after my favourite French centre-half cum left back and got away with it, but if you're not amongst football fans you may not be so lucky. Tasted great, looked like shit. Don't take the clementine granita out of the freezer too early, particularly if you've overdone it on the limoncello. It melts quickly and someone will suggest snorting it. The sugar really sticks your nostrils together on Boxing Day. Speaking of 'lost' Christmases past, John Lewis have hijacked Alison Limerick's 'Where Love Lives' for their new advert. Bastards. But not a bad ad.   Beansprout, I have a massive steel pot I bought from a Nigerian place on Choumert Road many years ago. It could do with a work out. I'm quite prepared to make a huge, spicy parsnip soup for anyone who fancies it and a few carols.
