Increase in thefts around East Dulwich

Has anybody else had any experience of theft around East Dulwich recently...

For example; Car wheels stolen from cars parked in the streets, bikes stolen from outside pubs etc, etc?

Surely the individual householder also has a role to play. Invest in a deadlock or two and a timer for lights and even an alarm; spread the word of suspicious activity on social media and - gasp - IRL; use intelligent water (supplied free by the police)to mark property; ensure hedges are cut down so as not to allow a burglar to be hidden as he tries to gain illegal entry. It's important to realise that we're not helpless.

I second the hedge suggestion- some of you lazy whatsnames deserve to get burgled.

Thieves and chancers soon respond when they know an area is well off. I remember when the P4 was diverted to run down Court Lane- there was a rise in burglary- the locals said it was because the people on the bus going from Brixton to Lewisham were casing the joints.

FYI I spotted a man on a bicycle riding along Crystal Palace Rd (outside Everyone Active) yesterday peering into car windows. He was carrying a broken bike lock which I assume he uses to smash windows. I watched him ride into the carpark of the flats on the corner of East Dulwich Rd and Crystal Palace Rd.

I reported it to the Police immediately.

Be on the look out and don't leave valuables in your car.

Somebody stole the lights I had purchased and secured to my skip!

Lovely. I have purchased the same lights again and I will securing them to my skip. No doubt for the 'do as you likey' just to help himself!

I don't suppose you caught a good look at him? I would suggest he was probably on a stolen bike and the lock was the one he had just broken.. there are some extremely unsavoury characters living in that block by the lights on the left next to Evans Cycles. Did you get much of a response from the Police?

Have you walked past there lately? Bottles of spirits on the windowsills, empty beer cans & bottles on the ground outside the windows, obviously just chucked out of the windows.. I've personally seen one of the 'homeless' people regulary hanging out in Lordship lane begging around the co-op and Londis coming and going from there.. methinks you need to wake up/ get a reality check!

Surprised that's allowed - Our Landlord (and we're shared ownership

I think your views are in their own class of socially unwanted.

You really have no humanity. Do you not have any idea how easy it is to become homeless? And I would assume you have no idea how hard it is to get out of that position?

That block is some kind of halfway house / re-integration facility I think.

I doubt anyone in charity hostel / halfway facility is making as much through begging as the amount fiddled by some MPs via expenses and they probably need the money more too. What they spend it on is their business.

Oh OK. I sometimes give money and other times I'll tell beggars to get lost (depends on my mood).

The one who used to pester me endlessly on Rye Lane came over to tell me he's moved to Elephant - and I know he just came out of a few months in prison too. Sadly he said "it's your country not mine" to me.

i have obviously nothing against genuine individuals that find themselves unfortunately homeless for whatever reason and personally have given money many times when I see that the situation is genuine. what i was intimating was that individuals from that block I have personally seen begging for money in Lordship Lane pretending to be homeless when they are not...

Crime is definitely escalating in this area.. not pointing fingers at the moment but if I had any supporting evidence then yes would definitely! Hence this thread..!

You can put people in a hostel and tick the box that they're not homeless, job done. But they may have substance abuse problems etc which mean they still go begging/engaging in criminal activities to sustain a habit. Who knows what desperate life experiences have driven them to that state. Nobody humiliates themselves cadging coppers on the street for a con, there's some serious shit wrong with them if they have to do that.

Doubtless I'm a bleeding heart liberal, but other nations have found a way to give care to the most unfortunate in their societies to the benefit of all. Pipedream in this country, I guess, if the attitudes on show here are anything to go by.

completely agree but what about the victims of crime .. do we have to just sit back and accept?

There used to be a Police station on 173-183 Lordship lane, but they closed it down because our area had so little crime allegedly. How times have changed...
