I like this thread. And to be fair I do like the name of many Scottish teams. Wasn't there a famous match where the commenator said 'they will be dancing in the streets of East Fife tonight' not realising that this was not a place.

I have actually seen a scottish match as well, Celtic vs Forest in the UEFA cup in 83 (old school knockout competition, which was more interesting than most of the current European competions). I stood in the Jungle and did not utter a word all night, but apparently half smiled when Forest scored their two goals and when asked how long to go mouthed the answer.

Alan Medic said

Queens Park Rangers is similar. (to Queen of the South)

Nonsense, Alan. Queen of the South is like poetry. QPR is just the name of a district in London (Queen's Park).

Queen of the South is SOOOOOO much better than calling the team Dumfries United.

You must agree!

You were kinda close, the commentator said "they'll be dancing in the streets of Raith tonight" when Raith Rovers from Kirkcaldy beat Celtic in 1994 I think it was in the League Cup.

East Fife are from Methil which is just up the coast from Kirkcaldy, the 2 teams are fierce rivals!

Edinburgh City play in the East of Scotland League along with Civil Service Strollers, Edinburgh University, Herriott Watt Uni and Lothian Thistle that are all from Edinburgh! I think Leith Thistle play in East of Scotland too.

Perth used to be known as St Johns Toun or something like that years and years ago.

    • Well worth a read   https://manchestermill.co.uk/the-men-who-raised-the-flags/
    • If it was limited to a couple of days a year, so we all knew, that would be fine. In the last few years (and it is a recent thing) you get random fireworks going off any time after dusk for half the year. It does more than cause problems for pets and wildlife- it can mean lasting damage and massive expense and hassle for pet owners. All because some get a buzz out of loud bangs.
    • Ohh dear.  Fireworks can be great fun.  Where I used to live the kids would have firework wars/games.  Watching them was more enjoyable than watching  TV. (Which you could hardly hear due to the pops and bangs).  It's not like anyone/anything could stop them. I would still prefer organised public displays that are affordable.   And I agree that fireworks cause problems for wild life, pets and people.   It seems to be one of those things that just happens so we have to put up with it.  But it is still not as problematic here as in other areas in London - that's for sure.
