OK, so who's in for a Elephant to Camberwell pub crawl?

Now that the scary Castle on Walworth/Camberwell Road is gone I'm in. I think I've done them all apart from that one anyway.. From the Tankard to the Corrib

When I was on an Elephant to Camberwell crawl in 08 we started at The Tankard and finished at The Hermits Cave and included The Castle and The Corrib. Whilst not exactly salubrious, the Castle had quite a friendly bunch in there, unlike the Corrib whose sole customer drunkenly challenged all of us to a fight. There are some quite decent pubs around there though, The Beehive on Carter St was a regular haunt of mine many moons ago. They do seem to struggle to stay open though, since our crawl at least 4 have closed.

Did you go into Liam Og's / Banana Bar? And how about The Temple Bar?

I would insist on venturing into D'Eclipse. It looks enticingly exotic.

The Corrib looks very wierd... the menu outside seems to advertise all kinds of revolting meals for ?1.99.

Temple Bar is shut as well now

Corrib is as old-school irish as they come - proper poker machine and everything

I've not had any trouble there but any pub which is home to "lonely men who drink too much" is likely to have stuff like that happen

And no I haven't eaten there either

The bittersweet irony is that the Castle on the Walworth Rd is now home to an Islamic centre.

Back in the early nineties I lived in one of the high rises at the back of Kennington park and Liam Og's was one of my regular drinking venues. It was a fine old boozer back then with quite an eclectic crowd, everyone from the local dealers off the estates to local comedians. I remember seeing Jo Brand at the bar on more than one occasion and Eddie Izzard and Mark Lamarr were part of the same crowd. I'm sure while Izzard is hanging out with Brad and George on Lake Como he's secretly hankering after being back on the Walworth Rd drinking a proper pint.

Yesterday 8 intrepid drinkers completed the East Dulwich pub crawl (see my original post) - a fine time was had by all. Each crawler gave the venues a score out of 10 so I thought I would share the results with the forum. Some surprising results, not least The Vale coming in at second place. I suspect the Vale's scores were inflated by the fact it was the last venue of the night and the live band caused some excitement.

The Clock House average score 8.6 out of 10

The Vale 8.3

The Bishop 7.8

The Plough 7.7

EDT 7.6

The Actress 7.4

The Magnolia 7.0

Adventure Bar and Lounge 6.6

CPT 6.1

Did you have any criteria for scoring, or was it just a vague general impression sort of score?

Vague impression based on your experience in the pub. Vale certainly benefited from people having had a fair bit to drink already! It was a very nice warm evening to sit in the garden out the back. Certainly not my first choice but there you go....the scores are the scores!

I have also been on a few 'crawls' recently and agree with most of your ratings - The Castle is an absolute joke of a pub, no atmosphere and I could have heard a pin drop when I walked in... The Mag is also very similar - there were more staff than customers when I went in! I am a big fan of The Actress, always top staff and beers on offer as well as The Bishop (I think they are both owned by the same person/group?)... get yourself a free Jager 'Bomb' if you go to both in one night as well which is a treat. Black Cherry has good drinks but I think an invalid could have served me quicker, 10mins to get a glass of wine and a cocktail!

Incorrect. The free Jager is offered outside of food service hours in an effort to get people from The Actress to The Bishop as the latter stays open longer.

I will take note of the free Jaeger.... The Bish (personal ED favourite) is just a short stumble to home on Crawthew Grove in any event. I think The Bishop would have scored higher but the resident dog was a bit moody and not up for a stroke. I had banked on that to get the scores higher from the girls in the group. Good times though. A few weeks to get back into shape for the Barry Road race on the 23rd :)

The Vale have hmv a new person booking live music, and at least they're trying things. I have had my issues with it, but equally had some fantastic times there back when it first became The Vale. I'd never say never (particularly as my band might end up playing there).
