It sounds like one of those historical truisms that's bunkum to me.

Especially as the S is pronounced s not th, which would be the case in a lisper.

I guess it might be a differentiation thing, it may well have been a sign of courtly manners and dripped down from the court in Madrid, a bit like the ott haich in bygone days in London, an attempt to up your status through diction (we're back to Mrs Mangle arent we), so though the story maybe tosh, there may be an ounce of truth in the conthept.

...said in a Rick Stein whine, "Oh I wish we could just be a little more like the French, I wish we, I wish, I just wish, ohhh (sigh)"

Well I know it's a sound that doesn't exist in Irish language. And even tho most Irish people speak predominantly English, early school (at least back in the 70s and 80s) was dominated by 2 hour long irish lessons in many schools. So it MIGHT be that, or at least related anyway. It's enough of a meme from older generations to be passed on

    • Ugly...maybe..does it bother me..NO! I think its somehow reassuring to see theres still phoneboxes around. East Dulwich may well be getrified but there may well be some elderly people who don't have mobiles and kids who may have lost theirs adults ditto etc etc. I'd rather keep it than lose it...just because i don't use it does'nt mean its not needed.  there are many eyesores in the modern world not all of them as potentially useful.
    • I strongly recommend Balayage salon in Lordship lane as everytime I visit, they make me feel very spicial with thier profisionalism and care.   I have been going there for the last 10 years maybe more, and will never exchange them for any other. They are profisional, welcoming and they also always have an offer. I feel like a new woman every time. X
    • The Pain de Campagne. The fruit breads look and smell good too but my missing teeth must include the sweet one.
    • Do tell me more. Is this we've all gone to hell in a handcart alarmist stuff?
