Hi everyone,

I have applied for scores of jobs, had one unsuccessful interview and before I go knocking on the doors of Iceland, Tesco or Burger King, thought I'd publicly prostrate myself on here in the hope that one of you might know someone who might let me work for free to get some experience.

So here goes.

I'm looking for work (paid or unpaid, part-time or full-time) as an immigration and/or asylum caseworker.

Have you thought about volunteering for the Citizens Advice Bureau, that would be great experience. I work in Woolwich, and the CAB there deals mostly with asylem seekers.

Here's a link

I noticed this which might be of interest for you.

"Attention all law students

If you train as a CAB adviser, you can get up to six months off your solicitor training contracts!"

Best of luck!

Probably a bit of a granny/egg-sucking interface but have you tried these guys? I have two friends who have worked with the council in different positions. And the London offices are Brixton and Vauxhall so easy for you to get to.

Thanx guys, I have just applied for the volunteering bit in the Refugee council too. I had looked there before but there were no vacancies. That was a while ago tho.

I've just changed my CV again to say up to 6 months of voluntary work cos I think that may be the only way to my foot on the ladder.

I'll keep you posted.

I've got an interview for a position as a paralegal with a really good solicitors on Wed.

It's one of the big ones that does a lot of groundbreaking (legal aid) human rights, immigration and asylum cases.

All the stuff that gets me going! I'm so excited I feel sick!

The money is really low but I'd do it for free anyway and if I get it, it will be my apprenticeship andf I'd get loads of extra training and stuff.

  • 2 weeks later...

Didn't get the job I went for, so decided to sod the internet job searching, printed off a load of CV's, tarted myself up a bit, bought a bus pass and harassed every solicitors with an immigration dept from here to Elephant, and guess what???

Some mad person gave me a job!!! It's only a voluntary position, but I'm really happy I finally got the position I wanted (immigration paralegal) and didn't have to resort to flipping burgers or stacking shelves (again)!!

I start on Monday so will have to dig out all my suity kind of clothes and start thinking like an adult at long last! Thank you so much Maurice for showing me the error of my ways!

    • Hadn't realised that the Panorama programme that people are up in arms about was over a year ago.  There wasn't much fuss at the time so why drag it up.  Unless you hate Britain, hate liberals, hate the BBC, want a divided country, support the most powerful person in the world despite his many failings. The programme was clumsy, but the vast majority of us know that Trump had an influence.  So the Telegraph has played into his hands.
