I have not seen anything advertised for kids in the area, but maybe I just don't know where to look, so if anyone knows of any holiday playschemes or activities that are cheap or free, please let me know, becuase I am very boring company for my 8 year old!

CWALD - don't have kids myself and not sure what qualifies as cheap but I found out about this place last week and quite fancy it myself

Walking through all those butteflies just flying around sounds cool.... (and it's moving to Lincoln soon so..)

Horniman is always good.

My 8 year old great nephew (not a Londoner) has been up this weekend and enjoyed wandering around Borough Market, along the Thames to Tobacco Wharf, HMS Belfast and then the other direction past Golden Hinde, to London Eye - lots of buskers, jugglers etc. He also went on the Duck Tour (the only thing my neice actaully paid for) which he thought was cool.

There is a fundraising event at the One o'clock club Peckham rye on Friday and an international cooking thing too, not sure what day (Tuesday?)

I also suggest swimming and/or softplay at Peckham Pulse. Rafts and Rascals is in the very warm hydro pool (check for times) and softplay starts on the hour. You can do both and have lunch in the cafe and still have change out of ?12.

There sill also be things on at the libraries, Dulwich and Peckham.

Covent Garden is free, to watch the jugglers etc, but you have to start spending ?? if you want a drink!

Science Museum and Nat History Museum free but v. crowded in the holidays.

DLR trip to Docklands Museum is a good one, not free to get in but entry gains you entry for a year, i think.

Imperial War Museum nr Waterloo is very good, lots to do. That's free. Can go on the 176.

I'm very much for grading attractions by the quality of the kids activities and interpretive staff; top as ever is the science museum, especially its two basement zones; Maritime, Imperial War, and Tate Britain kids activities are very good. if she is girly then V and A might suit. Tate Britains cafe has leaf tea by the way!

    • This week's edition of The Briefing Room I found really useful and impressively informative on the training aspect.  David Aaronovitch has come a long way since his University Challenge day. 😉  It's available to hear online or download as mp3. https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m002n7wv In a few days time resident doctors -who used to be known as junior doctors - were meant to be going on strike. This would be the 14th strike by the doctors’ union since March 2023. The ostensible reason was pay but now the dispute may be over without more increases to salary levels. The Government has instead made an offer to do something about the other big issue for early career doctors - working conditions and specialist training places. David Aaronovitch and guests discuss what's going on and ask what the problem is with the way we in Britain train our doctors? Guests: Hugh Pym, BBC Health Editor Sir Andrew Goddard, Consultant Gastroenterologist Professor Martin McKee, Professor of European Public Health, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine Mark Dayan, Policy Analyst, Nuffield Trust. Presenter: David Aaronovitch Producers: Caroline Bayley, Kirsteen Knight, Cordelia Hemming Production Co-ordinator: Maria Ogundele Sound Engineers: Michael Regaard, Gareth Jones Editor: Richard Vadon
