DulwichLondoner
I have 4 paint tins I'd need to dispose of. I understand I can take them to the council disposal centre near the Old Kent road, but I was wondering if there is a rubbish removal company that would come and collect it, for a fee of course. Does any one know? If there is, do they need to be somehow registered with the council? Is there any way to check? I wouldn't want to pay a stranger to just dump the tins who knows where. The council doesn't collect paint "for health and safety". I'm not sure I understand why it would be a hazard for a council van to drive paint around, but it wouldn't be for local residents to do it with their own car!!I don't have a car, so I'd need to either rent a zip car or go with a minicab. Thanks! almost peckham
DLif there is usable paint in the tins then why not list them on 'for sale/free'? They might be just what someone wants for a little bit of DIY and you get shot of for free. Bingo. DulwichFox
At the dump, any empty cans will go straight in the general waste. I assume therefore any empty cans can go in the green bin. I may be wrong. DulwichFox PS They must be completely empty. dbboy
Pop then in a skip would be my suggestion and ask the owner if they would mind. DulwichLondoner
They're not completely empty. Supposedly, they need to be disposed of separately as paint is toxic and polluting. stev0b
The City of London Corporation will collect hazardous waste (including paint) free of charge.Details here: https://www.cityoflondon.gov.uk/services/environment-and-planning/waste-and-recycling/household-waste-and-recycling/Pages/Hazardous-Waste.aspx Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/176644-disposing-of-paint-would-anyone-collect-it/#findComment-1202814 Share on other sites
Growlybear
If you put them in a tied up bin bag in your green bin, how will anyone know if there's pain left in them? The point is being a responsible person and disposing of things properly. tomskip
I think this is a good question, OP.How are people who can't get to the council dump several miles away supposed to dispose of toxic waste such as old paint? womanofdulwich
I wonder if you decant it into smaller pots to the extent it dries in them - if you can then put them in a bin? - like an inch of paint in a tin will dry quite easily? Asset
Still polluting and toxic when it's dry womanofdulwich Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/176644-disposing-of-paint-would-anyone-collect-it/#findComment-1203015 Share on other sites
Asset
from a quick internet search I think it depends on the type of paint what you need to do with it. Emulsion is ok to put in bin if dry, latex is recyclable and oil-based needs to be disposed of as hazardous waste. DulwichLondoner
I wonder if these rules are counterproductive, though. I'm not going to dump it illegally, but how many people would, given that the council doesn't collect it? Sue
On a separate but related subject, I have an old microwave to dispose of, is there any way I can get that collected free?Don't really want a trip to the tip just with that though I will if I have to.ETA: Sorted thanks to a very kind forum member Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/176644-disposing-of-paint-would-anyone-collect-it/#findComment-1203115 Share on other sites
lemonellen
Hi DLI have some tins of paint, amongst other things and will be doing a run to the tip this week. I'd be happy to take yours too if you haven't solved this already. worldwiser
freecycle.org has proved very useful in the past. The council wouldn't remove a clean old bath citing 'health & safety' so I guess they definitely wouldn't collect paint. Their operatives really must have terribly delicate hands. Do they not wear gloves anyway?
