It sounds as if the rats have been disturbed out of their usual space, so they're fetching up on your property - hence the dead ones and the ones running around in plain sight in daylight(?). The cause could be building or road works nearby or someone else putting down poison to kill them.

I can't help but feel sorry for them...

Rats only go in search of food and shelter. If they're heading in your house (which I agree isn't great) then either - as civilserveant says - they've been disturbed, or they think they can find food.

They don't go near humans if they have any choice in the matter.

As I think your house is unlikely to be a tip, then probably someone has moved them on from where they were. Unfortunately your only option (as far as I know) is to shout at EHO's until they do something.

Rats are the responsibility of local councils if they are found present in a private residence. Before you do anything though, you need to make sure you know the difference between a mouse and a rat (i'm not trying to patronise you here). Many years ago I had an issue with what I believed at the time were rats, and I informed the council and it turned out they were in fact house mice (which when fully grown can be fairly big in size). The council will charge you if they disocver on investigation that the infestation is not rats. Therefore, I would suggest contacting any reputable pest control agency (Rentokil an example), and they will send out a surveyor to investigate visible dropping and other signs of infestation.

Are you sure? Do you have a link to anything official to confirm this. I understood that most councils offered a service (that you pay for) but have never seen anything to indicate that they have a responsibility (other than to their own tenants if it was within the tenancy agreement).

"It sounds as if the rats have been disturbed out of their usual space, so they're fetching up on your property - hence the dead ones and the ones running around in plain sight in daylightquestion mark. My sister-in-law had endless problems with rats (including several dead ones in the house). The cause turned out to be a large rat's nest underground in their garden. Doesn't have to be waste ground, their garden was lawned and well kept.

Rats *are* vermin. They carry disease. We should not be sentimental.

Not sentimental - a rat has a life too.

If it dies on your doorstep because it was poisoned, surely it is ok to feel sorry for the wretched beast.

And people carry disease too.

Should we eradicate everyone suffering from a communicable disease because they might just transmit it to us?

I am a vegetarian and i do not like to see things suffer. I had mice problems, including in my own bedroom in my last flat, both rats and mice can cause horrible disease and personally I cant stand rats. but things like Viles disease I would not want near my kids if i had them. call a private company to come in and get rid of them as fast as possible, the process can take months to fully get rid of them (in the end my problem was solved by freezing temperatures and a broken heater in my house!)

good luck!

fair point, I guess. But since we are the dominant animal then we can say we dont want rats :)

your interpretation

there may be other reasons for killing rats, but the disease one doesn't wash.

let's take humans out of the argument, if you're uncomfortable with that.

Let's say instead - should we also eradicate dogs and cats because they are also known vectors for leptospirosis which, as you know, SJ, is the same thing as Weil's disease (which is what rats are blamed for?)

If you'll allow me, I'm going to carry on feeling sorry for rats, or for my fellow humans for that matter, if they suffer agonising deaths that are dictated by others' convenience

Weil's disease (which is what rats are blamed for?)

Rats carry more than Weil's disease

Although we are not currently at risk from a repeat of the black death, rats do carry risks of other diseases. These include:

Weil?s disease

Salmonella

Tuberculosis

Cryptosporidiosis

E.Coli

Foot and mouth disease

In my original comment I did not mention poison or any other method of extermination. Much as I hate rats, I do not want them to suffer. BUT we need to face the fact that London is rat infested. There are ways of control that are more humane such as birth control. Also we need to clean up - not drop food around on the streets. Will the people who misguidedly feed pigeons by leaving seeds and bread on the ground PLEASE STOP!

    • What was he doing on the stage at Glastonbury? Or on the stage at the other concert in Finsbury Park? Grinning like a Cheshire cat whilst pissed and stoned 20 somethings on the promise of free internet sung-- Oh Jeremy Corbyn---  What were his policies for Northern mining towns with no jobs or infrastructure? Free Internet and university places for youngsters. What were his other manifesto pledges? Why all the ambiguity over Brexit?  I didn't like Thatcher, Blair or May or Tony but I respected them as politicians because they stood by what they believed in. I respect all politicians across the board that stick to their principles. Corbyn didn't and its why he got  annihilated at the polls. A socialist, anti imperialist and anti capitalist that said he voted for an imperialist and pro capitalist cabal. He refused to say how he'd vote over and over again until the last knockings. He did so to appease the Islington elite and middle class students he was courting. The same people that were screaming that Brexit was racist. At the same time the EU were holding black and Asian immigrants in refugee camps overseas but not a word on that! Corbyn created and courted a student union protest movement that screamed at and shouted down anyone not on the left . They claimed Starmer and the centre right of labour were tories. He didn't get elected  because he, his movement and policies were unelectable, twice. He turned out not to have the convictions of his politics and died on his own sword.    Reform won't win an election. All the idiots that voted for them to keep out Labour actually enabled Labour. They'll be back voting tory next time.    Farage wouldn't be able to make his millions if he was in power. He's a very devious shyster but I very much doubt he'd actually want the responsibility that governance requires.
    • The purge of hard left members that were part of Corbyn's, Mcdonnel's and Lansmans momentum that purged the party of right wing and centrist members. That's politics. It's what Blair did to win, its what Starmer had to do to win. This country doesn't vote in extreme left or right governments. That's partly why Corbyn lost  We're pretty much a centrist bunch.  It doesn't make it false either. It's an opinion based on the voting patterns, demography and statistics. Can you explain then why former mining constituencies that despise the tories voted for them or abstained rather than vote for Corbyns Labour?  What is the truth then? But he never got elected!!! Why? He should have been binned off there and then. Why he was allowed to hang about is an outrage. I hold him party responsible for the shit show that we've had to endure since.
    • Depends on what the Barista says doesnt it? There was no physical confrontation with the driver, OP thinks she is being targetted when she isnt. These guys work min wage under strict schedules so give them a break unless they damage your stuff
