The main issue for me is the tall vehicles regularly parked near the junction.

If it's regular cars parked I can see something of the approaching traffic (either through the windows of the parked vehicle or over the roofs) as I'm fairly tall myself.

There are already double yellow lines in parts of Barry Road. I came home from work a couple of years ago to find double yellow lines outside my house. I have a drive so not directly affected but when my kids come and visit they have to park 10 minutes walk away. My mother had a Blue Badge and when she was driven by one of the grandchildren, they had to ring ahead to warn me that they were approaching the house, I would go out get Mum in her wheelchair and bring her into the house whilst the kids parked. Traffic wardens patrol Barry Road on Sundays as well as early evenings. They were not receptive if you had to park on the yellow lines to get a disabled person in or out of a car.


The main threat to the visability at Barry Road junctions is the extended pavements.

I was involved in an accident at that junction. We were hit by a car coming out of Underhill Road at about 30 mph. We very nearly killed the pedestrian who ended up underneath our car and all three of us in the two cars were badly injured. The repair work to the brick wall - that was done because of damage done by the force of our car being carried sideways by his. So yes, there is a problem with cars on Underhill Road not stopping.


The sooner something proper is put in place there, the sooner I can drive through it without a shiver going down my spine as I approach with caution...

Unless a real hazard or obstruction was being caused then said wardens behaved like "tin hitlers". It is perfectly legal to park on double yellows with a blue badge unless asked not do so by the police or a traffic warden. If they are "no loading/unloading" yellows it's a different story obviously

Sorry to hear you were involved in an accident - I imagine all involved were quite shaken up. However, I think this is the exception rather than the rule - I can't back this up with fancy stats, though!


There's no harm in having a stop sign for those not familiar with the area and therefore, unaware that Underhill Rd has give way lines.


Living near the junction, I have witnessed a couple of these accidents and each time the driver stopped at the give way lines. I have also seen numerous near misses and each time the driver on Underhill Rd was slowly edging out.

Indeed, both as a driver and a pedestrian near this junction!

The last collision map for Southwark showed reported crashes all along Lordship Lane concentrated Goose Green to Whateley Road.


The Underhill/Barry Road junction as reported beofre I met with council highway officers and the local Police sgt. we met off site and on site to assess the junction and we've attempted to replicate the Upland/Barry Road junction as much as possible as it had not have a single reported collission over the previous 3 years.

The changes made so far at Underhill./Barry Road junction - raised entry treatments both sides, re marking the worn road markings. So far no reported crashes at this location since these changes.

Sadly, I think it has just been luck that there hasnt been a crash at this junction since the improvements were put in place.


From my lounge window, I hear and see near misses here all the time - almost certainly on a daily basis, and that is only in the few hours when when I am at home.


The changes have made drivers creep out onto Barry road from Underhill, in order to see the traffic coming down Barry road, and this is what to me is causing the problem.


Has anyone from the council - roading networks actually gone back for a couple of hours and witnessed this junction in operation since the changes were in place? Perhaps this might give some perspective of the issue now?

I had to do an emergency stop there the other night when a driver trying to cross from Underhill Road pulled out into the middle of Barry Road hidden from view behind a number 12. It's getting like dodgem cars there now.


Why not re-open the bottom of Friern Road so cars can head down towards the park that way to relieve the pressure on the junction?

That's exactly the problem, you have to creep out when visibility is restricted. It's not the case all the time, the last few mornings have actually been fine, but when large vehicles are parked nearby you simply cannot see so have to edge out and obviously your eyes are 5 feet behind the front of your car..
