Ah sorry, hadn't noticed the change of hands. Either way, it's one of the most depressing shops on LL. Wish someone would take that one over as it's a big space. Anyway, don't mean to derail thread... Wonder if the Superdrug rumour is true? I'd been hoping for Boots if it was to be a chain chemist as I like their skincare range!

There was a Boots chemist in Sainsbury?s Dog Kennel Hill years ago. I seem to remember it occupied the space where Starbucks is now but it didn?t get a licence so it closed.

I remember the Boots being smaller than Starbucks which replaced it.

Ideally Lloyds would move down from North Cross Road to the Londis site. It's a well used chemist and tons better than Sogim where I went once and was told that the pharmacist was off.

If a shop unit isn't let over time then the landlord is trying to get too much rent. Really simple economics. Often an owner will inflations the rent they ask for so that after two years they say it was unsettable as a shop. They then seek change of use from a shop to a more profitable use. IT too many do this then the high street loses its purpose and footfall declines killing it.

50% is super important threshold.

I'm very surprised if that is true.

I sincerely hope not. Many of the Boots stores seem to be horrible soulless places, and I've never been able to understand how the chain struggles on :(

Whilst I hope it isn't a Boots, I very much doubt anybody living in East Dulwich would go to Forest Hill, Brixton or Peckham just to shop in a Boots!.

No, but people do go to Forest Hill, Brixton and Peckham to shop and do use Boots while they are there.

Apart from restaurants there are no real shopping facilities in East Dulwich.

There's M&S, the Co-op, Sainsbury's, Lloyds, two other pharmacies, Organic Village, Moxons, William Rose, three DIY shops, Blackbird bakery, a cobbler, a florist, at least two newsagents, two bookshops, several clothes shops, a shoe shop, at least two dry cleaners, at least two off licences, at least two plant shops, a toy shop, You can buy art materials now in Willows. Several gift shops. Farmers, which sells just about everything .. Many more, that's just off the top of my head.

What do you define as "real shopping facilities", Dulwich Fox?

My partner says you have to go to Camberwell for a record shop, is that what you had in mind?

There is no Electrical Shop, Phone Shop, Furniture shop.

Clothing shops are expensive and do not carry a wide range of sizes. Try buying a pair of Jeans.

There is no longer a Tailors.

Apart from Sainburys where can you buy cookware.

Where can you buy a clock , a watch, towels, a bedside lamp ,curtains, bedding , Sheets.

You can buy cookware at Farmers and a lamp at Mrs Robinson and other shops, Sainsbury?s sell bedding, sheets and lamps. I suspect you could buy most of the items listed by Dulwich Fox in charity shops and in other places in the area.

In all seriousness, with the rise of Westfield et al most ?local? High Streets would struggle to provide such services. I?m not sure ED is unique in that respect.

To the best of my knowledge, Sainsbury's in DKH sell towels, bedding etc. At least they used to.

Where in Forest Hill can you get these things you mention? Or Peckham? OK there are phone shops in Peckham. My daughter bought a new battery in one. It lasted about a fortnight.

Where are the furniture shops in Peckham, Brixton and Forest Hill? Where are the electrical shops? Where are the cookware shops?

For most places in London, you have to go up to town or to a big shopping centre to buy things like jeans, or to get a decent choice of cookware etc. That has been the case for over fifty years.

East Dulwich did until recently have a cookware shop. It closed down.

Many if not most people these days buy things you mention like electrical goods, clocks (if anybody still uses clocks), bedside lamps online.

I agree foxy. But then again, in a age of internet shopping, I suppose most departmental stores are heading down the pan. Locally, I would say we have a relatively decent variety of shops, however the prices may not reflect what sort of bargains you may be able to source elsewhere. I suppose that?s reflective of this sort of London neighbourhood these days.

Maybe some people choose to ignore those economic aspects when it comes to living in the real world 😊

The question was about Boots and I pointed out there were Boots stores in Forest Hill, Brixton and Peckam.

You said no one is going to those places just to go to Boots

I said They may go to Boots if they are in those places for other shopping

I said East Dulwich does not have real shopping facilities.

I did not suggest that all of the items not available in E.D. could be found in the other places.

Most if not all can be found in Brixton. Morleys sells furniture, bedding, curtains, and many of the items

I mentioned. There are Many Clothes shops, Phone shops.
