back to the OP

as much as accessing the local forum is good & a few weekends walking around, I usually have a gander at the local newspapers etc as preparation when moving house or a long term stay somewhere new. it usually give some background to the place.

In this case however, do not read any of the rags that serve the area. they are a cavalcade of unerringly bad news that in no way reflects the nature of the place.

good luck OP

Since you asked about Playfield and nobody has mentioned it, I'll give my view having lived there 5 years now. It has a great location, nice and quiet being a crescent and not a shortcut to anywhere. Parking is fine, since there are always spaces up by the school. Very little traffic or noise, but still just around the corner from Lordship Lane, under 5 mins to the cinema/pub/shops etc. Under 10 mins walk to ED station which is a bonus - east of Lordship Lane you tend to have a bit more of a walk.

Houses are terraces and vary, there are some smaller half-houses on one side, slightly larger ones on the other side, gardens are small but still big enough to have a BBQ in summer. Definitely worth a look around.

There are some council blocks in the middle between Playfield and Melbourne grove, which I know can put some people off but really you shouldn't worry, they are all good neighbours in the street, certainly no trouble. Most summers there's a street party, which is always good fun.

I didn't say it was. It was a recent example in response to the 'none that I'm aware of' comment.

If you look at the first page of threads in this section, roughly half are about minor crimes and associated topics like antisocial behaviour.

I must confess I actually felt safer in Manhattan in the 80's and 90's (when I was there a great deal) as a lone woman

because there were plenty of cops in evidence and yellow cabs parked at most major junctions.

i used to walk around downtown alone in the early hours of the morning and knew as long as I didn't look 'lost' or like a tourist I'd be fine.

I'd never dream of walking alone round central london (or round here for that matter) in the early hours.

Its bad enough leaving my work in the West end at 10.30 at night and circumnavigating panhandlers and moped gangs

    • Awful. A Google search came up with this, but will he check his office email over Christmas? Maybe worth also contacting local councillor? 'To contact Southern Housing's CEO, Paul Hackett, you can try his direct email, [email protected], or use the general contact email [email protected], as well as calling their main number, 0300 303 1066, for general inquiries or to be directed to the executive level.' Also, from the website: https://www.southernhousing.org.uk/latest-news/2025/contacting-us-over-the-festive-period   'Contacting us about an emergency? If you have an emergency outside of the above times over the festive period, such as severe flooding, an uncontainable leak, gas leak, complete electrical failure or lift breakdown, please call us on 0300 303 1066' I hope it is sorted out soon.
    • Dawson Heights again  2 lifts out of order at ladlands block Christmas Eve so of course the 🛗 will not be repaired tomorrow Christmas Day or Boxing Day or when how do elderly or mothers with children and prams and food and presents get to the floors and with the 10 minutes you get to drop off  to park and not get a Pcn fine and delivery food to relatives who can’t leave their house unbelievable Southern housing does any know email address of Coe of southern housing
    • Sorry but I think it's best if people just check things for themselves when they buy things. In three shops/restaurants (from some years back) I just avoid the places concerned, as in all three  cases I was pretty sure it wasn't a genuine mistake, and in one place  it happened more than once and usually late at night.
    • Sorry Sue - me again. This has been on my mind all day, it's a big bug bear of mine. If you don't mind - please can you private message me some of these shops so I can cross reference / add to my AVOID list.  Thanks in advance. Let's make sure this doesn't happen this Christmas, particularly as we head into sales season. Even more problematic in my experience.
