Hi all.

We're a little concerned about the increasing amount of advertising on the wall of Londis on North Cross Road.

Originally there was a general advertisement. Next came a Panther Cars one. We've nothing against Panther Cars, we use them as our primary cab company. Now there's an even bigger Glazer Delmar advertisement. We've been told by a reliable source that it is expected that the entire wall will be sold as advertising space. We understand that companies on North Cross Road need exposure but at what point will these adverts become an eye sore?

We'd like to know residents' and other business' view on this matter. We're concerned that very soon, all you'll be able to see from the windows of The Palmerston is advertising. The wall is no thing of beauty but it's rather more appealing that a wall of adverts.

Your views, pro, anti or indifferent please.

Thanks,

As far as I know commercial advertising hoardings are subject to planning permission (I hope so, anyway). I've been concerned at the apparent proliferation of advertisements on walls in ED, and another new advertising board (for a taxi firm) appears to be on Zenoria Street at the junction with Lordship Lane.

I walk past there most days and tbh I've never noticed them. They certainly didn't grab my attention, but I'll notice them now that the Palmerston has thoughtfully pointed them out.

They don't bother me though, unless they start displaying ladies (or lads) in states of undress, which seems to be mandatory these days to advertise anything from garden manure to solicitors' services. Then I'll join any picket going.

Edited to add - The Palmerston can take its pick of other unlovely things than can be seen (or smelt) from inside it, such as

- runoff water from the smelly fish van

- the Iceland 'eyesore'

- the smokers slowly pickling themselves outside the Palmerston itself

Massive illuminated advertising hoarding on two sides of the building.

There's a thread about it on here somewhere.

If we don't keep an eye Advertising will spread onto every surface. The advertisers are always looking for new places to put billboards. We don't want East Dulwich to look like Tokyo. So please don't bury your heads in the sand and hope your local environment will always be nice - it takes work.

    • These neighbours dislike trees period. They refused to have lost trees replaced by the Estate on our communal green. They don’t like the leaf and seed droppings. These make the grass look ‘messy’. Similarly, they don’t like my policy of leaving the tree leaves where they lie on the grass verge - hence chopping the overhanging branches. It’s like living in the 1950s. My neighbours have three gardeners with leaf blowers who come twice weekly to remove every leaf from their front lawns. Their grass is cut weekly and all the  cuttings put in multiple brown bins. It’s an outdated mindset of the moneyed classes in my view. But sadly, I’m very much in the minority.
