Willard
You can say what you like about Sir Jimmy, but he loved his mum. He really loved his mum. Jah Lush
I used to know Jimmy quite well years ago. He used to have a weekly column in the Sunday People where I worked for many years when I was a young buck working as a copytaker. Most Fridays I'd take his copy over the phone and we'd have a little natter afterwards, mostly about music. On occasion he would pop into the office to see everyone and would always stop by my office for a chat. He always had time for other people. For instance he gave up a lot of his free time to work at Stoke Mandeville Hospital as an unpaid porter. He would bring in freebies from his Jim'll Fix It programmes for my colleagues children and even got some of them in the audience for his shows. At the Christmas dinner and dances he would always come and sit with us (workers) instead of the directors or editors and would make sure we had enough to drink, even though he didn't touch alcohol himself. He was quick witted, charm personified and yes, OK a little eccentric but so what I thought he was a lovely man. A real salt of the earth.RIP Sir Jimmy Savile OBE Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/20284-now-then-now-then-now-then/#findComment-496072 Share on other sites
SimonM
Agree completely with Jah. Here is a little-known ED connection with Sir JS. About 20 years ago when Dulwich Hospital Kidney Patients were raising ?1 million to fund a brand new ward Jimmy made a 4 figure anonymous donation. He kept it anonymous as he did not want to hurt Stoke Mandeville's feelings ! He was seen quite a few times running down Dog Kennel Hill as part of his then route.
