NEIGHBOURHOOD ALERT

At about 4 am this morning (Thursday 28th December 2011) we had an attempted break in at our house in Marmora Road.

I was awoken by our dog barking and on going downstairs to investigate realised that someone had tried to steal our car keys using canes stuck through the letter box.

We found three lengths of bamboo tied together with duct tape to form a long pole with a hook, like a fishing hook, at the far end. The culprits had gone but had left it behind. I had left the keys to my car at the bottom of the stairs that evening. The distance from our front door to the bottom of the stairs is approximately 15 ft but their canes did not reach that far. I think that if they had had more time they could have attached another cane and maybe have reached the stairs.

Forensics have been but no prints were left behind

I wanted to alert neighbours to be wary of these tactics and to be aware that these people are operating in this area.

Sorry to be pedantic but I find it kind of irksome that people refer to all theft as 'robbery'. Robbery is defined as violence or the threat of violence in order to commit theft. This case was attempted theft, not attempted robbery although it could be argued to have been attempted burglary if his arm was on the premises through the letterbox.

Oooh, LD, don't get me started on why 'copyright infringement' (downloading songs/movies) is not 'theft'...

    • Thanks for the replies. I am expecting several personal and official letters that were posted last week and should have arrived by now, including a new bank card. I complained to my MP, Helen Hayes, a few years ago when most people in ED had the same problem.  She took up the issue and things seemed to improve.    I rang Peckham Sorting Office but the call went to the PO call centre - after a 20 minute wait I managed to speak to someone so  I'll see if anything arrives today.
    • Monday I think. Just adds to all the fun and so well timed. Why just have annoyance when misery could be in play?
    • Anyone know when the road works by the junction of Barry Road/Peckham Rye and outside Harris boys school appeared, got caught up in them late last night, coupled to the Rye Lane works it is making travel cumbersome.
    • WOW… Money and politics talk… Belair House has been a lost cause for years - surprised it has survived as c long as it has….but, if rumours over the years are true, “foreign money” … Most people these days in the village and surrounding area and let’s face it, either have inherited house, invested for own wealth or bought to be in catchment area for schooling both private or state, left to go abroad and rented, or bought by actors, sold to Russians etc..  Local knowledge years ago what was happening -
