Mr Liu Chinese Restaurant

I've been going there for about 7 or 8 years and not once had a bad meal, quite the opposite. It's delicious.

Silk Road is the bollox. It is regional food, just like Cantonese food, just a different region.

Silk Road has some of the most gloriously abrupt serving staff, and their cuisine is very different from Cantonese fare - but that's not to knock good Cantonese cooking (often seen as a high point of the different regional cuisines). I've not (yet) been to the new incarnation of Mr Liu - but if they deliver good quality versions of what's on their new menu that would be fine. It's pretty traditional 'London chinese' - but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Done well it's very satisfying. 'Completely authentic' chinese regional cuisine (away from Party Banqueting (and I mean CP when I say Party) is low on proteins and high on starch. And can involve the sort of beak to toes and things with too many or no legs ingredients (and textures) which westerners can find challenging.

Looked at the menu online for Matoom. There's a lot of stuff on there that doesn't sound particularly Thai (won ton soup, aromatic crispy duck, gyozas, samosas, etc...). But I guess they're just trying to please everyone. If the actual Thai dishes are decent, I'd give it a try.

I agree there are certainly other influences (a bit like I've often found in Thailand)..... I would still recommend giving them a go though. I've found them to be refreshingly good!

I've just had a take away from 148 Chinese

In my opinion, crap food, prices have jump since the new start up..... Even with the 10% opening discount which is on until Sunday.

It's my closest Chinese, but I need to find another!

Any other recommendations?

I have to say I do miss cafe noodle, especially the Kung po king prawns with cashews..... That was lush

Oh dear re 148. Sad but not entirely surprising.

I don't miss Cafe Noodle.

I used to eat there back in the day because it was cheap and filling and OK.

Until my partner and I were both quite ill after eating there .....

We just had a takeaway after these recommendations.

Very underwhelmed. Probably shouldn't have played safe and gone for Pad Thai.

The prawn crackers were ok.

Unlikely to order from there again, sadly.

Tied the new Liu- the food hasn?t changed. It?s old skool (which some will consider underwhelming), but I?m a fan. Glad they?re back open.

Thank you for the recommendations, everyone. It reminded me of the Thai I would have when I lived in Sydney - fresh, light and absolutely full of amazing chilli heat.

What did you have?

Because I love Thai food, and have been to Thailand where I had great food, but the meal we had delivered last night was sadly bland and unmemorable.

As I said, we should have chosen something else, so I'm interested to know what you would recommend!

We gave Mr. Liu a try a few years ago, but having been charged 50 pence for a tiny dish of chilli sauce and another 50 pence for a few cut chilles, we never went back. Neither the food nor the atmosphere was anything to shout about. Hopefully the new owner will make a positive difference.

I had pad kee mao with chicken and it was brilliantly spicy with proper flat rice noodles which I haven?t found at Lux or Thai Corner Cafe. We had the samosas too which were full of good quality chicken.

Husband had duck mee ped which wasn?t as spicy or saucy but looked nice to me! He said he would order it again.

Egg fried rice was yummy too! Went a bit overboard ordering as wanted to check everything was delish.

I too miss Caf? Noodle. It is the nearest Chinese to me along with Mr Liu,

I started using Mr Liu when Caf? Noodle started closing at 10-00 to 10.30pm

Mr Liu has friendly staff but the food is mostly too sweet and gloopy with the Red sauce that accompanies many dishes.

Mr Liu seems to be closing earlier now too and therefore too early to collect food on my way home.

Hong Hong is by far the best Chinese t/a in the area but is in the opposite direction to my place and food gets cold by the time I get home.

I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on the Pad Thai, then, if you fancy trying that in future!

Maybe we just had unrealistic expectations.
