reds
Youngs have bought Redcomb pubs who operate The Cherry Tree. I would imagine this will lead to changes. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/216324-cherry-tree-sold-to-youngs/ Share on other sites
rendelharris
That sounds OK, or are Youngs evil now (I certainly wasn't happy with them closing the Wandsworth brewery)? If it means there are a few decent proper bitter options on (I was in the Morpeth Arms on Millbank the other day and it reminded me that they still brew a decent pint) instead of the ubiquitous IPAs and craft beers that have dominated in there recently that would be nice. The current staff are really nice though so hope they are kept on, and that they keep their policy of allowing at least one TV to show the rugby even if it's not an international. Very sad, another piece of our heritage flogged to the highest bidder. The statues will be standing in the sameTree-muffled squares, and look nearly the same. Our children will not know it?s a different country. All we can hope to leave them now is money.Philip Larkin, "Homage to a Government" Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/216324-cherry-tree-sold-to-youngs/#findComment-1311000 Share on other sites

DulwichFox
Since the old bar was ripped out and the tiny bar installed it has become a soulless place to drink. Most Dulwich Hamlet supporters give it a miss and head for the East Dulwich Tavern which has become their base camp. Youngs are welcome to it. BigED
Wasn't the Cherry Tree (in an earlier incarnation) where the great train robbers finally met up for a celebration drink having pulled off the big heist (and maimed the British Rail driver in the process)? Alan Medic
I was surprised to see the ex owner/manager? coming out of it recently. I seem to remember he wasn't very popular. MarkT
"They used to have Open Mic night on Mondays - which was really popular with some local musicians."JohnL,Yes, it has been running for some while on the first Monday of each month, also really popular with some people who come as audience. The next date should be next Monday 4th Feb, but with the change in ownership, who knows? Keep an eye on the What's On section. Also from time to time, excellent gigs from our local swing band the Fabulous Honeys.MarkT Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/216324-cherry-tree-sold-to-youngs/#findComment-1311658 Share on other sites
holistic-keri
I must say I have been in the cherry tree a few times and I like the new refurbishment, once a month they have the DJ from house of tippler and it gets really busy. It is so much better than it was a few years ago, nice friendly staff and the beer is much better than the EDT which I just cant understand why it gets so busy. The cherry tree is much better in my eyes but we all have different opinions. I like the great expedition at the moment amazing food Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/216324-cherry-tree-sold-to-youngs/#findComment-1317351 Share on other sites

Not sure) the other day and he had the impression that it was going to be a "soft touch" takeover without drastic changes so hopefully the pub will keep its (many, in my opinion) good features and events. What happened to the plans to make the upper floors a hostel, does anyone know? Nothing seems to have been done in that respect, did they get knocked back or just decide to drop it? Scruffy Mummy
In the summer, the garden at the back is a wonderful sun trap and a much nicer place to sit than at the front of the EDT. I've enjoyed many a G&T in the back garden of The Cherry Treet.
