Tonkotsu Peckham

According to southwark planning, this ramen style restaurant with branches in Soho, Battersea and Notting Hill will be opening at 133 Rye Lane. Even Peckham is getting more imaginative restaurants than ED.

Excellent! And yes, for some years now Peckham has had many more interesting places to eat than East Dulwich.

This is great news - we have been missing a decent ramen place really, ie somewhere quick that just serves Ramen like Ippudo. Looking forward to it opening.

In terms of why East Dulwich doesn't have such imaginative offerings though, imagine a lot of it comes down to rent costs.

Tonkotsu is pretty decent. I heard there's also going to be an Indian "small plates" type restaurant, and a new offering by Forza Win in the same building.

East Dulwich has the independent Monkatsu selling exactly the same stuff but in a more imaginative and independent way than the corporate Tonkotsu chain of restaurants

East Dulwich is a bit old and faded really - to be honest.

Peckham has some fab restaurants - ?10 for a bowl of ramen is a bit pricey though and will limit it's customers and exlcude many - this is what the start of 'poshing up' an area looks like.

A great place with a great MO is The Pepper Tree in Clapham - good, cheap food and it's always packed (as it's good AND affordable)

A soup shop or not, it's just another chain. Could just as well be Wagamama's.

I think you?ll find Wagamama was also tipped for the station arches redevelopment near Peckham Rye station.

Edited to add, Ive spoken with Tonkotsu and they?ve confirmed they?re on track to open the Peckham branch sometime in August this year.

There is Building work on Blenheim Grove along by the Station.

I was under the impression that this was due for demolition to open up the Station Square

but evidently it is all being redeveloped and Not demolished..

I remember as a kid there used to be an amazing model shop(Train Sets and the like )along that stretch.

It will be somewhere close to the Bussey building complex I would assume, as the planning application states 133 Rye Lane, which was formerly the old Lyons Tea House many moons ago, and more recently a butcher. You can?t miss it, it?s currently being developed at the bottom of Blenheim Grove near the railway bridge.

But it's not the same. Tonkotsu is a ramen specialist. Monkatsu do several types of Japanese food (katsu, teriyaki, tempura, noodles, sushi, and a type of ramen.. probably miso based).

I do like Monkatsu, but normally in Japan you wouldn't find a restaurant doing all these different things, restaurants often do just one thing, and make sure they get it right. So while Tonkotsu is a chain, you could argue it's a more authentic experience.

Personally I don't think ?10-?12 for a bowl of ramen is bad.. especially if you go for the traditional pork broth base, it's a rich, filling bowl of food. Wagamama is a similar price (for an inferior version), and I don't think many people would claim that Wagamama is "posh". TBH it's a hard to get a decent meal for much less than a tenner these days anyway.

It will be in the new "Market Peckham" building, which is in-between the entrance to the Bussey building, and Khans Bargains on Rye Lane. The building work is still in progress... in fact it still looks like a shell to me, so would be surprised if any of the restaurants opened in August. Although saying that, I'm sometimes Amazed at the speed at which these people can complete a fit-out, so you never know...

But of course - 'dynamic, exciting, more interesting Peckham' is really just a couple of localised areas of Peckham, filled with people from East Dulwich and Shoreditch (insert winky smiley)

On a less cynical note: there are decent places in East Dulwich, there are decent places in Peckham. You can get from one to the other in five or ten minutes. Everyone wins (assuming you can actually afford to go drinking and eat out, which rules out a sizeable percentage of the people in both areas).

A problem I have raised numerous times on the forum and been accused of trolling.

Some months ago when Nando?s announced they would open in Peckham, the trendy right on brigade started moaning on social media about ?independent high streets?, and yet the minute something opens that they enjoy, its all good.

For most people eating out is a luxury, and chains aimed at the masses shouldn?t be excluded because it might upset some blow in with trendy specs from shoreditch, who wants to be seen noshing on a organic independent vegan sausage at the top of the Bussey building on a Friday night. Cheap chains provide a service for everyone, not all independents (for obvious reasons), can offer that value for money.

Yes I have seen that place, was there again this lunchtime.

Does indeed look like a Shell which is why I dismissed it.

Very true how fast these places can be fitted out with the right team.

I remember all the excitement(?) about Nando's. I don't know what happened.. perhaps the redevelopment of the Alesham centre changed things?

Nando's would be fine with me. At least it's something pretty much everyone can enjoy. You can't really claim many places along Rye Lane appeal to a cross-section of the community. Maybe Costa... *maybe* McDonalds.

Yes definitely ! ED is getting boring by the day now - although I like living in quiet ED and going out in Peckham (instead of the other way around).
