Should we start a list of good and bad customer service around ED? I think plenty of businesses read this forum and should know what we think. Springer's restaurant across from Dulwich hospital ranks 10 (the highest) in customer satisfaction out of all restaurants in East Dulwich for me. Also Dulwich MOT on Hindman's Road, and Bushells for estate agents. On the negative side, can't say for legal reasons!!!!or can we? Please advise....

Comments must be deemed fair. Fair comment covers content, mainly opinion, that cannot by its very nature be true or false. To be properly defensible, these comments must be:

* Based on fact

* Made in good faith

* Published without malice

* On a matter of public interest


so you can tell of your negative experience but if, for example, a shop gave you the wrong change do not say "shop x robbed me and are ripping off their customers". Common sense prevails and if something is dodgy please report the message (click the "Report This Message" link beneath it) and we will take action if necessary.

OK then. Thanks for the info. Well, here goes. I think Foxton's estate agents could have better local knowledge with regard to pricing. I think HSBC and Lloyds could provide more staff during peak periods. I agree that Acorn staff need a few lessons, and Sainbury's East Dulwich staff are sometimes less than polite!!! Is this acceptable?

I love the staff in Chener Books. It's a sort of lettered version of the music shop in High Fidelity, but it's all the better for that. For every sharp intake of breath through pursed lips at purchase, I also get a raised eyebrow and approving nod.

Love it.

I've always found the staff in Threshers friendly, but I've also often found them a bit lacking when it comes to knowledge about their stock. Although one person in particular did say she was about to attend some training, so perhaps things will improve.


They staff in Green and Blue and Nicolas always seem to know their stuff.

I also think the camera shop on LL give good customer service at all times...he will always help put things right if someone is unhappy, also the pharmacist just down from Somerfield is wonderful.

For good, friendly, unpretentious customer service I would recommend:


The CPT ? Just because it is run by genuinely nice, friendly people which is something I appreciate.

Val?s Grocer ? For the same reason.

The Plough - As the staff really do seem to be making an effort.

William Rose - For the friendliness and efficiency that they handle the busy weekends


I don?t really have any bad reports. Most places seem ok but the above 4 definitely stick out from the rest.

Can I make a suggestion because this could get all geuinely confusing.

Why don't we have a section called

LOCAL SHOPS AND BUSINESSES in ALPHABETICAL ORDER - OUR OPINIONS

Then ALL our thoughts about each service shop or business could go in the relevant section.

Can we also include LIBRARIES in that alpha list?

I needed a copy of Chekov's Cherry Orchard. The library said that not ONE library in the WHOLE OF SOUTHWARK Libraries had it.

Went into Chener Books. ?1.90. job done.

Edited to add: And if this new section was added - it would either go into it or be a subsection of Wanted. Recommendations or something?

You are very organised and efficient and your ideas are good. However, I just wanted this to be a bit of fun and not too serious for a Monday morning. If others think this should be a permanent fixture, we should make the recommendation to the administrator.
Mrs LL popped into Val's yesterday for some Star Anise. Non on the shelves so Val went into her own kitchen and gave Mrs LL a handful so that I could finish off cooking dinner!! How good is that(tu) I can't think of a nicer shop keeper on The Lane and she always has a cheery smile. If only I could do ALL my grocery shopping there.
I hate to be the grumpy killjoy but - bit of fun or not - these are people's livelihoods we are toying with. That's not to say I'd ever wish to discourage someone posting details of an outstandingly good or bad experience with a particular outlet on here - even though these things are subjective they can be useful sometimes. I am just not sure about "institutionalising" it, as it were, in a dedicated topic. Plus I think in the interests of fairness local retailers, restauranteurs etc should be actively encouraged to name and shame lousy, bothersome or dishonest customers by name... :))

I bought a torch in SHaun's yesterday and the young chap who served me happily climbed up and down his ladder to show me a good selection. When I bought batteries to go with it they knocked a little off the price. Well done to Shaun's.

While I agree with you, critics make and break livelihoods all of the time, and no one objects to bad press against actors/directors/singers/dancers/politicians, etc. I think we on the forum can state our opinions and as we saw today, most comments/opionions/stories were extremely positive.

It may have been Monday morning when you wrote it, but this is a very good idea for all of us and will be read at all tikmes of day and night!

And yes, it has to be moderated so no-one can get away with writing vindictive nonsense ;)

I think it's a great idea because it can only benefit the shops and services concerned when they learn what they're feedback is and act accordingly.

    • Perhaps Gooseygreeny was not familiar with the wildlife before Gala was imposed on the park, since when its value to wildlife has deteriorated. The Park had never been disturbed before, as the council had respected it as a Site of Importance for Nature Conservation, so only the Common was licensed by them as a site for events. The first time Gala held their event, there was a tree with woodpeckers nesting in it right in the middle of the main field they used and thrushes, blackbirds and great tits nesting within the shrubs and trees immediately surrounding the field. The woodpeckers were thriving on ants from the anthills in the grass. To those of us who used to enjoy watching the wildlife, it was very obviously a Site of Importance for a variety of birds. Despite being accessed by the public and their dogs, it had been relatively undisturbed,  which was one of the main reasons why it was so special and why I have been opposed to the Gala festival being held during the bird nesting season.
