just rang up to check about membership - i've seen on other threads the club is very keen for new members/opening times (before seeing this thread). cant say i got the same feeling from the guy on the phone who couldn't wait to put the phone down.

I'm keen to join because of other comments and the clubs facilities, it frustrating when the first point of contact for the club is so negative when the need for members is so high...

We had a meeting with somebody there not long ago re possibly putting on music evenings.

It was the first time we'd met him - he was grumpy throughout, didn't smile once in about twenty minutes, and could scarcely bring himself to shake our hands when we left. Same guy you spoke to?

We didn't bother pursuing it.

ETA: Sadly, there are other posts on this forum from other people more or less saying the same thing. So we can't say we weren't warned .....

Hi Sue, sounds like it probably is the same guy!

I'd be keen to use the snooker tables so in that respect i'd still like to join. Think they need a word with the 'co-oridnator- as to how to try and attract new members/business if they still want a club in a few years....

Cora, from other posts i think the membership cost is minimal - there is a number to call but it didn't get me very far. I'd probably suggest heading down there and taking a look/speaking with someone on the day. As Toniw mentioned you can just use the facilities as they get your membership sorted.

Don't bother ringing the bell if it's outside their advertised hours - even if you've phoned up and then been told to go down between certain hours on a certain day when the appropriate people will be there to discuss things with you, if it's not within the hours advertised outside, they won't bother answering the door.

When we eventually phoned from the door - having been ringing the bell for some time - said grumpy man appeared, did not say hello or smile, just gestured grumpily that we should go to a side door (a fire exit which was invisible from the front of the building, with no notice indicating it was there, and which we did not even know existed).

I'm sure the other people running the place are probably helpful, but Mr Grumpy appears to be the chief.

ETA: Just found another thread about this:

Closing September 29th. Apparently the building is worth many multiples of millions of pounds, once the building is flattened.

Just so a property developer can come along and chuck up a few flats, sell them for millions and waddle off again. Probably had their eye on this site for years, salivating at the thought!

I didnt even get the chance to join up, but i would have if it wasnt being closed down. Surely places like this are worth more to the local community than said expensive flats?

Did you remember where you saw it was to be flats? Haven't seen this anywhere.

Unfortunately the club is closing on the 29th September and the building is being put on the market by the owners, Association of Conservative Clubs after that. As I understand it at present it can only be sold as a licensed premises so unless a buyer can get change of use it can't be turned into flats. Also it is Grade 2 listed. There are a few members, myself included, who are getting together to see if there is anything we can do to keep it as a community space. It is to late to keep the present club open as there was a majority vote to close it last week.

Excellent! Please keep us posted!

ETA: I don't know whether it would apply, but The Ivy House was saved when it was listed (?) as an Asset of Community Value (I think) - might it be worth having a word with the committee?

I had heard this so was interested to know where Humdinger had picked up his info from - he doesn't seen me to want to share!

The Dulwich Constitutional Club closed last September. It was quite a remarkable place - the 1970s frozen in time in East Dulwich. Despite being quite a social centre, it was hardly ever mentioned on the Forum. Upstairs were several good snooker tables, with posters of snooker heroes like Jimmy Higgins and Steve Davis on the walls.

So what's happening to it? What about that bowling lawn at the back? According to a post earlier on this thread it's a listed building and change of use will be difficult. What will happen to the only bowling lawn in East Dulwich, and to those snooker rooms upstairs?

Most mysterious.

I think it is currently occupied by Guardians. They were fixing the place up recently. Might be worth wandering over and having a chat. They seem quite approachable. Or alternatively, you could contact the guardian company. off the top of my head I am not sure how they are but there is usually a sign on the building.

Cheers,

Brigid

    • I like empanadas. I don't think Chango is a massive chain - it's got a few stores all in London I believe (stand to be corrected if I've got that wrong). I don't see a problem with them opening on the Lane personally. I really like Chacarero, but that doesn't mean that they should be immune from competition - if they're successful and open a couple more stores, are we then meant to stop supporting them for being a 'chain'?  That opening post does sound a lot like marketing spiel though. Is the OP perhaps connected to the new business I wonder?
    • According to what I can see online, Dynamic Vines and Cave de Bruno sell totally different kinds of wine to each other.  Dynamic Vines  "work with independent winemakers who produce outstanding wine using sustainable practices in the vineyard and minimal intervention in the cellar".  Cave de Bruno specialises in French wines and spirits from small independent producers. So two different USPs, and no doubt two different but overlapping customer bases who can afford these wines. Probably different again to the people mainly  shopping for wine at Majestic or the Co op. On the other hand, the two empanada shops appear on the face of it to be selling virtually identical products. But time will tell, won't it? Let's see how they are both doing in - say - a couple of years' time. Impossible, of course, to compare that with how they would have done if there had been only one of them. I just feel more  sorry for the original one than for  the one which can apparently already afford to have a number of shops in places like Mayfair and Highgate. I'm tempted to buy something there every week, and I don't even like that kind of pastry 🤣
    • Not only can he turn olive oil into Vermouth, but also water into a wine. A true miracle worker.  I wouldn't say a wine shop sells a wide variety of things - and there are two right next to each other.  And once upon a time, upmarket pizza shops were very specific. So were burritos etc. These Argentinian cornish pasties are clearly becoming mainstream; we should consider ourselves lucky to be witnessing this exciting upward trend within our lifetimes and on OUR HIGH STREET. We can tell our grandkids that we remember when there was no internet and no empanadas.  I'm sure that if the family empanada people have a good business head, they'll be able to ride this wave of competition, just like Bruno has.
    • Very economical. Are you available for events? I've got a gathering of 5000 coming up soon. What could you knock up with two little fishes and five loaves of bread? Cod in breadcrumbs? Fish finger sandwiches? Spanish-style croquetas de bacalao with a Romesco sauce? It's BYOB for beer, so there's no need to worry about that and I've managed to do an unbelievable deal on water and wine. Drop me a DM on here or ask for Dave or Jesus (pronounced 'Hay-Zooze') in The Herne, left hand side of the bar.
