lnprett
The old gothic Nunhead cemetery is perfect for walks. Skehan's pub (near the station) is a good proper community pub - great for live music, with a pool table and thai kitchen! Telegraph Hill park is lovely with amazing views of the city. FC Soper fishmongers is great. Ayers bakers for bread and cakes and delicious doughnuts! Grocers is good too. Old Nun's Head is alright they have a Thai cook who is amazing. Where are you moving from? All the surrounding areas are great too! Lots in ED, Peckham Rye, Brockley etc. I love Broca food market in Brockley and Ganapti South Indian restaurant on Bellenden Road (in Peckham). Bar Story (nice cocktail place) under railway arches by Peckham Rye is another favourite! North Cross Road (off Lordship Lane) is nicer and quieter than LL with better shops and nice market at weekend. Welcome to the area as you can probably tell I love it! Undisputedtruth
Don't forget Frog on the Green. John, the proprietor of the deli, takes great pride in his food. He's also a trained chef and provides meals. For takeaways, we have the award winning http://www.2sisterstandoori.com/ .Us Nunheaders understands what is good food. No need for silly shops like M&S. antantant
Take aways:Na Pura for Portugese - Nando's style chicken but a lot more options too. They're on Taste Card if you eat in and want 2-4-1. Also Great Wall is a dodgy looking but surprisingly good Chinese take away. Second best Chinese I think is Golden Noodle at Queens Road Peckham Station. Convenient if you come that way home from London Bridge like I do. Actually the Lebanese there is pretty good too.Nkem is a Nigerian restaurant that does take away which I also like - certainly a bit different, and I like Crossways Cafe for hungover breakfasts. The Telegraph at the Early of Derby is a great pub, although they could do with some couches. They do a good Indian night! I pretty much agree with everything lnprett said too. Undisputedtruth
Na Pura is run by genuine Portuguese - a good place if you're looking for home made Nando's style chicken but without the commercialism and expense. Well it seems Nando's portions are getting more smaller and more expensive each year.I must admit, I'm not a great fan of our Chinese takeaways in Nunhead, the Golden Noodle used to be really good until a change in ownership some years ago. The Chinese Wall is a chip shop/chinese takeaway. Okay, but nothing to write home about, though the portions are large. There used to be a great Chinese takeaway on Nunhead Grove. Not sure if it's still there but they had a great reputation fo high quality food. I'm not aware of a Lebanese eating place on Queens Road especially as I know the area very well. Crossways cafe is okay but not connoisseur standard.Bejan Spices has good tasty food but the owner is pretty tight on portion size. Especially on salads.http://www.spices-se15.co.uk/ is another great Indian takeaway. You can taste the fresh ingredients. Nunhead is pretty fortunate to have two very high quality curry takeaway establishments. I thought it was just me being greedy :) Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/25075-about-to-move-to-nunhead/#findComment-568446 Share on other sites
Gidget
Been to Bajan Spices twice and don't rate it. Had a fritter there and it was flat and tasteless. Have also tried a roti and the spicing was blah. I think Trini food is better. There is a great Trini place in Deptford Marked called Chaconia which is open from about noon until about 10 at night. Lovely gorgeous food. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/25075-about-to-move-to-nunhead/#findComment-568448 Share on other sites

I thought it was just me being greedy :)No, it's not you being greedy for once! Nandos have introduced a larger size portion for extra money which is about the same size as the original portions.@GidgetI do agree better value options elsewhere than Bajan Spices. Shame really as I like to support local businesses though I prefer home cooking than takeaways. Had some heated discussions with the owner. Mind you, I've yet to see a West Indian establishment that can match or even exceed my mum's cooking.@edcamI think everyone knows Soper's has the best fish for miles. Soper's is handy as it's just around the corner for me. Hehe. Undisputedtruth
Through the grapevines, apparently you're famous for it in ED.In fact, eating establishments see it as a sign that their food is of high quality. antantant
Has anyone tried Tops on Queens Road? Also, does anyone know what the Hollydale Tavern is like? Undisputedtruth
I've used Tops several ago but I gather there has been a change of ownership recently. Much better than Bajan Spice. More for your money and certainly more spicier.Hollydale Tavern is okay. Large Snooker table and TV screen. Seems to have liven up in the last few years since the change of ownership. PeckhamRose
Lived here nearly 30 years and it's a gem. May I also recommend AG Flowers - Wendy who works there has become a friend over the years I have been a customer and they are so helpful and friendly. Sopers don't just sell fish. They will advise on how to cook it if you ask them, and for someone like me that is so useful! Short walk to the north end of Peckham Rye Common so links to all the rest of the world. Welcome to kyoto! Oh oh oh and you also have The Best Doctors Surgery in Southwark. The Nunhead Surgery is at 58 Nunhead Grove and they retain 020 numbers, humans answering the phone, and are an independent NHS practice not owned by some American conglomeration. Undisputedtruth
Oh yeah, best thing is that there isn't an estate agent in sight. No M&S or Tesco.I'd say Nunhead is a truly organic area. Made up of real shops and people untainted by commercialism. njc97
Just repeating what people have already said:Lots of good food shops: Sopers fishmongers, Ayers bakers, Bambuni deli, greengrocers and Smiths butchers all by Nunhead green, plus Frog on the Green (John there is a really good cook) and Dish and Spoon delis.Pubs: Nuns Head is good, as is Skehans (especially the Thai food) and the Telegraph (last couple on Telegraph hill rather than Nunhead).Dry Cleaners/shoe repairers etc - the place by Nunhead station is excellentTops are ok but I prefer Smokey Jerkey over in New Cross. Chinese - havent found anywhere near that great but Hong Kong diner up on Old Kent Road is fantastic. Indian - 2 sisters. Mmm. Undisputedtruth
Pricing is not always an indicator of quality. Unfortunately too many people think it is and so daft enough to pay more for a property.
