Years ago, I was recommended a particular hypnotherapist to go to to stop me smoking.

I came out of the session gasping for a ciggie.

I don't smoke any more, but I don't think the person in question can claim success for my giving up more than ten years later ......

:)

I don't believe that hypnosis exists - you don't enter a hypnotic state when hypnotised, you just believe that a hypnotist has some power over you. A hypnotist is going to tell you an approach to diet, a plan to exercise more and to give you techniques for sleeping. If you believe that hypnosis works and you are suggestive then during your session you may listen to what he's saying but a hypnotist is not a sleep expert or a diet expert or an exercise guru.

If you want to exercise more, go to a personal trainer and sign up for six weeks. If you want to diet, research diets and choose one that suits you. If you want to sleep better, try to analyse what is preventing you sleeping or go to a doctor.

When I mention that I am an East Dulwich based hypnotherapist I am sure you won't be surprised that I disagree completely with Charlie and am aware of a vast amount of research evidence that contradicts his points.

I see clients at the Dulwich Therapy Rooms on Lordship Lane and can be contacted via that clinic on 020 8299 4232 or by mobile on 07957 517330.

Alternatively, please feel free to email me on [email protected].

Thanks.

    • This week's edition of The Briefing Room I found really useful and impressively informative on the training aspect.  David Aaronovitch has come a long way since his University Challenge day. 😉  It's available to hear online or downloads as mp3. https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m002n7wv In a few days time resident doctors -who used to be known as junior doctors - were meant to be going on strike. This would be the 14th strike by the doctors’ union since March 2023. The ostensible reason was pay but now the dispute may be over without more increases to salary levels. The Government has instead made an offer to do something about the other big issue for early career doctors - working conditions and specialist training places. David Aaronovitch and guests discuss what's going on and ask what the problem is with the way we in Britain train our doctors? Guests: Hugh Pym, BBC Health Editor Sir Andrew Goddard, Consultant Gastroenterologist Professor Martin McKee, Professor of European Public Health, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine Mark Dayan, Policy Analyst, Nuffield Trust. Presenter: David Aaronovitch Producers: Caroline Bayley, Kirsteen Knight, Cordelia Hemming Production Co-ordinator: Maria Ogundele Sound Engineers: Michael Regaard, Gareth Jones Editor: Richard Vadon
    • That was one that the BBC seem to have lost track of.  But they do still have quite a few. These are some in their 60s archive. https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m0028zp6
