No, not a niche website...

But is anyone else tired of how filthy our streets are?

Overflowing street rubbish bins, regular fly-tipping and poorly swept paths are making parts of ED look pretty crappy .It's no coincidence we have a rodent problem in ED. And those autumn leaves will soon be slippery mush underfoot.

Last time I called the council helpline to ask them to clear up the flytipping on my street, I had the temerity to ask for the name of the person in overall charge of refuse services in the borough.

I was informed by the person taking my call that she " couldn't reveal the personal details of her colleagues".

When I eventually tracked down the responsible officer, I put in a call to her office.

Oh yes, I was told .... We' ll call you back within 24 hours.

That was more than a fortnight ago .

Seems to me that the council is happy to take our money to keep our streets clean - but really don't give a sh@t about doing it. Anyone else feeling ripped off?

I know theyve gone to monthly cleaning something to do with some cuts the government has made it is alleged

Just be glad you don't live in Peckham where the side streets off Rye lane have dumped rubbish ,doorways used as urinals ,as the norm .

I can't help wondering why what seems to be lower standards ( cracked ,uneven paving stones general dirt and neglect ) operate in Peckham .

The dog poo bin near my place has been overflowing with kebab boxes for a week now. Dog owners are dumping bagged dog poo on the pavement beside it (there's another poo bin about 100 yards down the street). I am waiting for another load of bottled p*ss to be dumped nearby to complete the picture.

I guess we need to find out the most effective method of dealing/reporting such messes .

Presumably emailed photographs of the offending areas .

But I'm not sure who to send to or who to escalate to if no action taken .

Who can advise - James ?

Email [email protected] with a photograph. If they don't react in a reasonable time, resend the email stating 'It is now X days since I notified you.....'.

Some issues will have specified response times so you won't get a 24hour response to something that could wait a few days (it may have been there for a week but the clock only starts when you notify)

General wording is less likely to get a reaction than something specific. Be very clear where the problem is ie which house it is outside. And you need to put your own full name and address on the email

Including wording that prioritises the issue - if it's dog faeces in a children's play area, highlight health and safety, and possible negligence - helps enormously.

If you've witnessed someone slip on rubbish/leaves, say that you're prepared to be a witness in court.

I've never had to escalate it - the most emails on the same issue was three to get a response (they were going through a bad patch).

I'd never bother phoning them - if it's not in writing it's easily 'lost'.

Since we have a Labour controlled council and a Con/Lib dem government then front-line services will be cut back instead of cuts being made 'in the backroom' i.e. non-essential admin. This always happens- the general public will suffer because that has the political impact. A certain amount of money is allocated to our services but it does not have to be spent on the front line.

I contacted James about Silvester Road not being cleaned and he replied, on P.90 on the EDF. Apparently the Council are only sweeping once a month now.

I had no luck with the e-mail address James gave me, so sent him an e-mail direct, and also reported a light out in our road. The light was fixed within 2 days and then the road was swept!!!

I couldn't agree more with this thread I have lived in dulwich now for 18months and keep hearing from the local community of how fantastic it is and what a great place to live ( some of which is true ) but I am shocked at how filthy it looks in most of the streets. Some you can blame on the foxes but who puts out rubbish in bin liners knowing full well that they will get ripped to shreds and don't get me started on the dog poo ( owners fault not the pet )

Dulwich is scummy!!!!

Don't get me started. The bin bags you're talking about - are they bright blue ...and left close to the public street bins?

If so, that's the work of our genius council . They're the bin liners from the public bins - which are regularly left out by the council workers overnight.

I've almost given myself a freaking hernia complaining to the council about this.

I really don't want to be that ranting guy - but I'm increasingly getting my Meldrew on.

Complaints to Southwark Council ignored.

Mentioned fly-tipping into the wild woodland adjacent to Underhill Road.

Camberwell Old Cemetery gets ????? spent refurbishing its Wood Vale side. So we're nervous in case Underhill's beautiful trees get felled, what we want is attention to the disgusting, never-biodegradable litter.

Afterwards perhaps a more adequate fence, and a gateway allowing the footpath to link this side, which would encourage vigilance from everyday walkers.

Isn't that just the point though? We shouldn't have to call/email/write to get them to keep the streets clean. It should be done as a matter of course.

Yeah we should pay council officials to stand on each street corner. Plus a network of CCTVs backed up by helicopters to check the cleanliness of our streets.
