What's this tune?

It's driving me nuts.

It would probably have been 70s or 80s, and I think it starts with a bit of frantic guitar action. It would have been a perfect intro for a motor racing show.

It goes 'diddley diddley, diddley diddley, diddley diddley DAH DAH' and then repeats. Soundhound doesn't recognise it.

Hi-diddle-dee-dee

An actor's life for me

A high silk hat and a silver cane

A watch of gold with a diamond chain

Hi-diddle-dee-day

An actor's life is gay

It's great to be a celebrity

An actor's life for me

Hi-diddle-dee-dum

An actor's life is fun

Hi-diddle-dee-dee

An actor's life for me

A wax mustache and a beaver coat

A pony cart and a billy goat

Hi-diddle-dee-dum

An actor's life is fun

You wear your hair in a pompadour

You ride around in a coach and four

You stop and buy out a candy store

An actor's life for me!

A sheet music version gives the following:

Hi diddle dee dee

An actor's life for me

A high silk hat and a silver cane

A watch of gold and a diamond chain

Hi diddle dee dee

You sleep till after two

You promenade a big cigar

You tour the world in a private car

You dine on chicken and caviar

An actor's life for me!

    • In deed.   An hour is optimistic. I'd always use the train/tube, so many options from the slowish Picadilly, quick Heathrow Express and Lizzy line in the middle. In the old days I'd go out to Feltham via Clapham Junction and either get a cab from there or the bus to avoid central London Alternatively 3 hours by bus only Or a couple of hours by bike, I have cycled there a few times including illegally going through the tunnel as it is so bike unfriendly.
