Sorry I should have said, it's not a political club - it might have been at one point but it isn't now, there are no links to the Liberal Democrats or I wouldn't have joined :)


Women can also join! It's just a social club, member-owned and thus cheaper as there is no rent to pay. Membership has dropped over the years so the club is struggling to meet basic bills, so it wouldn't take too much more custom to set things right again I don't think.


Mild is a type of beer that you don't see much these days - in fact my first pint of mild was in the Peckham Liberal Club, out of curiosity. It's coming back a bit thanks to craft brewers. I'm quite keen on it now, which is a good thing as Maggie the barmaid always starts pouring me a pint of mild after seeing me on the CCTV entry system, so I don't get much choice any more.


I might have misrepresented Peckham Pandemonium, their last event was jazz but the upcoming one is a David Bowie tribute - I'll edit that.


I don't want to oversell it, it is a well-worn social club and about as old-school as they come (I've met people there who have been members since the 60s) - it won't be to everyone's taste, fair enough. But it's cheap and the space is great, so come down and have that half of mild ;)

No, it's not really a jazz club, there have just been a few jazz events in the recent past.


It's a members' social club that's been there for over a hundred years - like a working men's club, but open to men and women. There used to be loads of these clubs like this in the UK but many have closed down - there's around 2000 left I think. They are registered as industrial and provident societies rather than private businesses. Historically, many of them were started by local political parties, so you get Labour Clubs, Liberal Clubs, Conservative or Constitutional Clubs, but I don't think many of them are explicitly political any more. The name isn't ironic, it's just the historical name of the club, the Libersls must have set it up.


Recently some clubs have been turned into privately-owned pubs but have kept the old-fashioned trappings, "ironically" - the Effra Social in Brixton, for example. This is not what this is about, although if people want to join ironically they are more than welcome as long as they pay their membership subs ;)

It's a wonderful venue. It's a decaying vintage social club. Trapped in its 1970s decor - vinyl & Lino, nicotine stained polystyrene ceilings with a wondrous labyrinth of spaces. A spectacular bollards room - dark & beautifully nostalgic, and a very cheap bar with TV screen. Oh - and a garden!


This is a brilliant place to hold a party.


I went to the jazz gig there. Jazz is not my cup of tea - bit (more than) dull & an audience of half unconscious, & rather self conscious (& very young) trendies trying desperately to appear like jazz loving beatniks......


But the space is enchanting and a real gem!

Agree it's a great place, bit rabbit warren.


One of their rooms is quite big with a proper stage.


We looked into having our concerts there ( http://www.thegooseisout.com ), but sadly they had bingo on Friday nights - and wouldn't change their bingo nights (fair enough!)


Lovely people behind the bar.


All a bit of a time warp, but nothing wrong with that :)

Re: smoking, the ban applies to social clubs as well as pubs but there is a decent sized garden with a sort of smoking shed.

Went along last Saturday ?[ some sort of Fete on - ?2 entry] ? No one interested in membership forms for a new member ? Said there was an AGM in February 2014 ? So presume ? they now have enough members?: John Smiths ?3-50.

If anybody (non-members) wants to see the venue properly I'm putting on some music / DJs there tomorrow 11/12/13.

Bands starting 8pm, more of a party with small ?5 contribution mostly towards Phillipines Storm Relief Fund. Blues + Country-ish + Indie-ish (though I hate to label)+ Rinse FM featured DJs 'til 0200. Food too - goat curry and rice n peas, also cheap bar ! You'll save you entrance on the beer alone.

Come down and get down for a decent cause. Local artists contributing their time and skills to make this happen, including Zonderlings.

Unfortunately, this is not yet the case - chalk it up to poor organisation/internal communication, I also asked for a new membership form for my mate on Saturday and there were none behind the bar on the day which was surprising, but yes the club is still looking for new members - I think there will be a more co-ordinated push in January.

      Are we now under a flight path?

      In 2016 London City Airport began using concentrated flight paths. When there's a predominantly westerly wind, incoming aircraft approach from East London (north of the River). When there's a predominantly Easterly wind, incoming aircraft approach the airport from the West: circling through Forest Hill, Dulwich, Vauxhall, Tower Hamlets, Docklands. This latter flight path affects many of us in South East London. https://www.london.gov.uk/who-we-are/what-london-assembly-does/questions-mayor/find-an-answer/london-city-airport-concentrated-flight-paths The planes going into City are often below 2,000 ft, so very noisy. Sometimes we have incoming Heathrow at the same time, flying higher. The early flights that I hear e.g. 04:30 are incoming to Heathrow. They are scheduled to land at 05:30 but are 'early'. Apparently the government allows a percentage of flights to arrive early and late (but these are now established as regular occurrences, informally part of the schedule). IMHO Londoners are getting very poor political representation on this issue. Incredible that if you want to complain about aircraft noise, you're supposed to contact the airport concerned! Preposterous and designed solely in favour of aviation expansion.

      Yet another recommendation for Jafar. Such a nice guy, really reliable and fair. He fixed a problem with our boiler and then incredibly kindly made two more visits to replace a different part at no extra cost.

      I didn't have any problems with plane noise until city airport started flying planes to and from about 5-8 minutes apart from 5.30 am or  6 am,  and even with ear plugs and double glazing I am woken at about 6 well before I usually would wake  up. I have lived here since 1986 and it is relatively recently that the planes have been flying far too low over East dulwich. I very much doubt that they are headinbg to Heathrow or from Heathrow. As the crow flies we are much , MUCH closer to City Airport than Heathrow or Gatwick. I even saw one flying so low you could see all the windows, when I was in Peckham Rye Park.
