Over the Xmans holidays, I cleaned out the spirits cupboard - about 12 bottle of full / half bottles of rubbihs holiday bought spirits- Turkish "Chin", Belizean rum, Some Slovak home distilled Slivovitz etc, and took them up to a park on the OKR where piss artists hang. I presented the box of shite to the street drinkers and ran away

was this a bad or good thing ?

Bad bad bad thing. Slivovitz was responsible for one of my worst hangovers of all time, evil evil evil.

And I recall this great advice from a war photographer

"Never photograph a retreating army, was one of them. And never refuse Slivovitz from a commander was the other one. Never trust [anyone with] an AK-47 who is under 11 years old. And then the last one, which is the only serious one, really, is, always remember that no picture is worth your life. That's the most important one, going into any given situation, realizing that you can walk away having missed fantastic images, and that's OK, because the point is to be able to take pictures tomorrow."

Hey, I've just had an idea, I've got some left over smack in the cupboard from a few years back, there are a few junkies up the park there, do you reckon they would really appreciate it if I went in and dropped it in on them? yeah why not, lets just add to their voluntary suffering/self-abuse eh, after all they're bound to get it from somewhere else anyway, erm....so I may as well go and help them along their way.....well thats helping out society......

Max when people are at this stage of street drinking, they really will find a way, and if they don't, as ratty points out, they can become very ill. Cold Turkey is not a good thing!

Now I know it may seem funny to give these people more drink, but surely that's better than letting them lie, cheat, and steal to get the next drink?

All one can do is hope that these people will come to a stage where they are ready to fight it... Some will, and some will drink themselves to death, that's the reality of it, but giving them a drink isn't going to make a difference either way in the long run.

The effects of alcohol are just as bad as drugs, I'm just trying to say why stop at giving away your excess booze to these poor ba*#strds, why not give druggies your excess drugs too! druggies lie, cheat steal the same way but you wouldn't go giving them drugs just because you had excess at home. Drug addicts also become ratty and cold turkey isn't very nice in either scenario, but morally not sure I agree with this one.

Definitely a good thing.

I used to busk as a tap dancer in Leicester Square. I had quite a following amongst the local homeless - probably cause I was a weird little wild thing who did the splits and high kicks. We had a good mutual relationship - they looked out for the old bill and would let me know when they were on their way so I could gather my things and quietly sneak away (try doing that wearing tap shoes) and in return I bought them bottles of cider. Contentment all round.

    • Thank you to everyone who has already shared their thoughts on this. Dawson Heights Estate in the 1980s, while not as infamous as some other estates, did have its share of anti-social behaviour and petty crime. My brother often used the estate as a shortcut when coming home from his girlfriend’s house, despite my parents warning him many times to avoid it. Policing during that era had a distinctly “tough on crime” approach. Teenagers, particularly those from working-class areas or minority communities, were routinely stopped, questioned, and in some cases, physically handled for minor infractions like loitering, skateboarding, or underage drinking. Respect for authority wasn’t just expected—it was demanded. Talking back to a police officer could escalate a situation very quickly, often with harsh consequences. This was a very different time. There were no body cameras, dash cams, or social media to hold anyone accountable or to provide a record of encounters. Policing was far more physical and immediate, with few technological safeguards to check officer behaviour. My brother wasn’t known to the police. He held a full-time job at the Army and Navy store in Lewisham and had recently been accepted into the army. Yet, on that night, he ran—not because he was guilty of anything—but because he knew exactly what would happen if he were caught on an estate late at night with a group of other boys. He was scared, and rightfully so.
    • I'm sure many people would look to see if someone needed help, and if so would do something about it, and at least phone the police if necessary if they didn't feel confident helping directly. At least I hope so. I'm sorry you don't feel safe, but surely ED isn't any less safe than most places. It's hardly a hotbed of crime, it's just that people don't post on here if nothing has happened! And before that, there were no highwaymen,  or any murders at all .... In what way exactly have we become "a soft apologetic society", whatever that means?
    • Unless you're 5 years old or have been living in a cave for several decades you can't be for real. I don't believe that you're genuinely confused by this, no one who has access to newspapers, the tv news, the internet would ask this. Either you're an infant, or have recently woken up from a coma after decades, or you're a supercilious tw*t
