today at 4pm my 14 year old son was asked for his oyster card and phone which he immediately surrendered. Police informed, everythng cancelled but just to warn. He was on his phone. Robbed by older boy, tall, thin, round 17, mixed race, blue and grey cap, blue zip up, who asked which school he went to, accompanied by white girl with blonde hair, tallish, slender who melted away just before the encounter. Son ok, did sensible thing.
thanks all, he's fine but annoyed. The police said you just can't tell if theyre chancers or not. He could have said no and they may have walked away...or they could have punched him or worse. So although he is annoyed he is not traumatised. But it was ever so subtle.

yes told tfl, they say if a stolen oyster is used the user gets fined. Trying to find original oyster number for police so they can link it if this happens!

the other thing, my boy had a feeling about the approaching boy. I'm telling him now, act on instinct, cross the road, turn around....! follow your instincts!

I absolutely agree with this.

ETA: Glad your son is OK.

Hope your son is ok. That's the third mugging/attack I've heard about within the past few days, one being another youngster mugged on the way to school in North Dulwich. Think it's one of those crimes that's so common now that the perpetrators just don't care about the consequences as they know they will prob just get a fine!

I think if muggers are caught with a stolen bus pass they should at least get community service.

You've got a point there Huggers But how did they know he had a bus pass? Did they ask him to empty his pockets? If so then they probably were just after everything they could get their hands on. Makes me so mad. How did your son get home in the end?
he wasnt far from home, he had walked anyway. He was on the phone, but they asked for the oyster first, then as an 'afterthought' for the phone, but he was very conversational, like 'what kind of phone have you got there?' it was daylight! didnt ask for money. probably opportunist..hence my thought about the oyster testing the water. If it didtn go his way or a passer by noticed what was going on then the perp could pretend he wasnt actually mugging him.

10,000 smart phones are stolen in London every month (mps twitter) so nicking iphones/blackberrys etc is obviously a very lucrative business!

Sad as it is but maybe a basic 20 quid pay as you go mobile could be the way to go, can't imagine they would bother nicking these.

That would be my son.... who attends Charter, he told me yesterday that a couple of kids from his school have been robbed this week both to and from school. These happened in the North Dulwich train station - Casino Avenue area. it's very worrying.

So glad your son is ok and I hope it hasnt knocked his confidence in anyway.

    • @first mate  just Google the Green's policies and AI should summarise.  For sustainable transport this includes more initiatives to get people out of their cars as you would expect.  I've always been broadly in favour of their environmental policies, although feel they should go further on culture change. Some of their national policies are bonkers and/or unrealistic - as are most of Reform's.  Historically fringe parties could come up with nonsense, as they will never govern.  Of course whilst I don't expect that Polanski will ever be PM that other bloke could be.  Worrying times, particularly if the Greens split the centre/left vote.  It would be better if One Nation Tories could split the centre vote (and drag some of those on the right), but they don;t have a lot of influence in the current party. One particularly bonkers policy was one element of the Greens who wanted us out of Europe, not because of Europe being pro market/capitalism but because we needed a recession, deindustrialise, so we would all go back to the middle ages.  Or something along those lines.  I lost some friends because of this. https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p03y5trr#:~:text="Protectionism against developing countries%2C savage austerity in,the case for either remain or leave. https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2016/jun/08/eu-reform-green-brexit
    • I've planted a meadow out front, it needs a lot of work.  It's lovely until August and then grotty until the next spring as once the flowers have died back it doesn't have a lot going for it.  Clover is the last one to flower.  It will get admiring looks when in bloom. I laugh quite loud when I pass one neighbour with plastic grass, not only is it dead to nature it is not even laid well,   I should be crying.
    • Andy did a number of jobs for me and was very reasonably priced. He's very helpful, arrives on time, pays attention to detail and a nice man. I'll be using him again and recommending him to my friends.
