The appalling column he writes weekly for the Guardian certainly hasn't helped my opinion of him. Especially with the fawning posts in the comments that follow.

Anyway, back to the more positive 'love' part of this thread. As someone posted a clip of him in the Pope thread... Tim Minchin. Brilliant.

I don't loathe Stewart Lee, I think he is almost great at what he does. He has the audience eating out the palm of his hand. His delivery is spot-on, as is his timing, and he has an original stage presence. He is clever and intersting too, but I don't find him that funny. Doesn't mean I hate him.

I hate Stuart Lee

Yeah, really I do, but not for the right reasons.

My mate works in TV, oh yeah, he's a large-ish cheese. So he got us free tickets to one of Lee's shows, nice I thought!

Only when we got to Islington or wherever & got to the door early, like 45 mins early, we were turned away. "Sorry, full up!"

"But we've got tickets" we protested, though as the guy on the door explained so had all the others in there. Seems they give out way too many freebies, so the show fills up.

Boy was I cheesed off with the large-ish cheese guy, all I could think of was "EXTERMINATE" i'll give you fekkin EXTERMINATE.

Next time i'm going dressed as an 8ft Edam that can time travel.

Woooo ooo oo -dan da ga dang....wooo oooo

"Mitchell and Webb" like all sketch shows, even the best of them, often involves sifting through the dross.

There is a high 'moments of genius' count in that show though.

As performers I guess they're probably quite marmite, but I think they're superb.

I don't think you can accuse Pegg of selling out - he was always pretty geeky, so stuff like Star Trek and Paul seem like a natural fit. You can accuse him of making a couple of really really bad films though - he's lucky Run Fatboy Run didn't finish him.

i've been lazy and not read the whole thread; but i'd like to recommend Daniel Kitson (although i'm sure most know him already, Brendon Burns, Doug Stanhope & Louis CK.

Ricky Gervais should always be mentioned in passing for the Office, but nothing else he's done has come close. I think the xfm podcasts are overrated, extras was boring, his stand up is awful, an idiot abroad was TERRIBLE, and i've not seen Derek and don't want to.

    • He seemed to me to be fully immersed in the Jeremy Corbyn ethos of the Labour Party. I dint think that (and self describing as a Marxist) would have helped much when Labour was changed under Starmer. There was a purge of people as far left as him that he was lucky to survive once in my opinion.   Stuff like this heavy endorsement of Momentum and Corbyn. It doesn't wash with a party that is in actual government.   https://labourlist.org/2020/04/forward-momentum-weve-launched-to-change-it-from-the-bottom-up/
    • I perceive the problem.simply as spending too much without first shoring up the economy.  If the government had reduced borrowing,  and as much as most hate the idea, reduced government deiartment spending (so called austerity) and not bowed to union pressures for pay rises, then encouraged businesses to grow, extra cash would have entered the coffers and at a later stage when the economy was in a stronger position rises in NI or taxes would have a lesser impact, but instead Reeves turned that on its head by increasing ni which has killed growth, increased prices and shimmied the economy.  What's worse is that the perceived 20 billion black hole has increased to 30 billion in a year. Is there a risk that after 5 years it could be as high as 70 billion ???
    • That petition is bananas.   If you want a youth centre there pay the landlord the same rent a Londis would and build it yourself or shut the f**k up to be honest. Wasting our MPs time with this trivial nonsense is appalling. If your kids are still out at 1am on a school night you've got bigger problems than vapes and booze and hot sausage rolls.
