Stewart Lee would have us believe that if we don't 'get' him, we're just too thick. He's made a career out of sniping at others' success. He dismisses this much logged criticism as one which simply misunderstands him. Think he regards himself some kind of anti-comedian. Morrisey meets comedy, if you will.

He certainly looks a bit like Morrisey.

Still think Jim Jeffries is way superior.

Saw a clip of him being heckled at Edinburgh. Bloke shouted, "I've seen better than this." "Course you've seen better you thick [c word]. I've seen better. I watched a Richard Pryor video the other night and I was [f'ing] depressed."

Which reminds me that I must get hold of some Pryor as I really don't know him at all.

One of the best heckle put-downs I heard was from a female Aussie comedian. Being given a hard time by a couple of drunken lads one shouted "Suck my Cock!" and she replied "Mate, I wouldn't suck your cock if I was drowning and your bollocks were full of oxygen!"

You're right - couldn't remember her name. It was at The Swan pub in Fulham in about 1986/7.

seen some reasonable come backs too and a room silencer

at the EDT, Comedian...a bit average...."What do you use for contraception mate? your personality?"

Heckler: "What do you use for yours mate? Your act?"

I also was present with someone of robust views when Lee Hurst said "is there anyone in this room who actually voted Tory?" (about '93) and this bloke says "Me", Lee Hurst says "Why?" and this fella says "Cos they didn't have a BNP candidate in my constituency"...nice atmosphere..i *think* he was joking

I like Stewart Lee. There I said it.

Not everyone's cup of tea with people saying he is smug and doesn't tell jokes. Partly true, however, I enjoy the way he goads the audience (myself included) and breaks down the fourth wall of stand up. He is kind of a throwback to the alternative comedy scene of the 80s, so is different to all the Russell comedians of today. I would recommend to anyone his recent books - a transcript of stand up shows which are heavily annotated and really interesting.

I like Richard Ayoade and Matt Holness' Darkplace - that was genius. I'm also a big fan of Larry David's Curb but I am aware of its recycled format.

Ok, now for the comedians I don't appreciate: Miranda Hart, Jimmy Carr, Frank Skinner,

On the Gervais argument, I liked The Office as many people did. But I think the general perception is he got too full of himself and it was more about him boasting about how great and successful he was and this put a lot of people off. I don't especially like Derek, Extras was ok and whilst the podcasts are good in places - it kind of felt like he was bullying Karl Pilkington...

I thought some of the series was pretty good. Parking Patowayo was probably the best.

Don't all stand up comedians break down the fourth wall? Are there any that don't directly address the audience?

I quite like the idea of a stand up comedian who acts as if there is no-one else in the room, performing to the voices in his/her head.... :)

Nicholas Parsons

Nicholas Parsons on "Just a minute"

Nicholas Parsons, I love him. Tho I used to loathe his smug face on TV.

Did I mention Nicholas Parsons ?

Whereas Jenny "vinegar tits" Eclair get on my friggin' wick.

(I know i've said this before, but she was on "Just a minute" tonight - this riled me)

I saw the Rick Gervais programme about an old peoples' home recently for the first time, although I don't find it that 'funny' it IS cringeworthy in a comedic kind of way, it does focus on sentimental aspects and banality of life for workers / staff and relationships between them in that environment and I find that interesting in a fashion (not the fact that it's a retirment home per se, there HAS to be some stting though, right).

The observations it makes and the behaviours / awkwardness acted-out were sort of intruiging.

    • What was he doing on the stage at Glastonbury? Or on the stage at the other concert in Finsbury Park? Grinning like a Cheshire cat whilst pissed and stoned 20 somethings on the promise of free internet sung-- Oh Jeremy Corbyn---  What were his policies for Northern mining towns with no jobs or infrastructure? Free Internet and university places for youngsters. What were his other manifesto pledges? Why all the ambiguity over Brexit?  I didn't like Thatcher, Blair or May or Tony but I respected them as politicians because they stood by what they believed in. I respect all politicians across the board that stick to their principles. Corbyn didn't and its why he got  annihilated at the polls. A socialist, anti imperialist and anti capitalist that said he voted for an imperialist and pro capitalist cabal. He refused to say how he'd vote over and over again until the last knockings. He did so to appease the Islington elite and middle class students he was courting. The same people that were screaming that Brexit was racist. At the same time the EU were holding black and Asian immigrants in refugee camps overseas but not a word on that! Corbyn created and courted a student union protest movement that screamed at and shouted down anyone not on the left . They claimed Starmer and the centre right of labour were tories. He didn't get elected  because he, his movement and policies were unelectable, twice. He turned out not to have the convictions of his politics and died on his own sword.    Reform won't win an election. All the idiots that voted for them to keep out Labour actually enabled Labour. They'll be back voting tory next time.    Farage wouldn't be able to make his millions if he was in power. He's a very devious shyster but I very much doubt he'd actually want the responsibility that governance requires.
    • The purge of hard left members that were part of Corbyn's, Mcdonnel's and Lansmans momentum that purged the party of right wing and centrist members. That's politics. It's what Blair did to win, its what Starmer had to do to win. This country doesn't vote in extreme left or right governments. That's partly why Corbyn lost  We're pretty much a centrist bunch.  It doesn't make it false either. It's an opinion based on the voting patterns, demography and statistics. Can you explain then why former mining constituencies that despise the tories voted for them or abstained rather than vote for Corbyns Labour?  What is the truth then? But he never got elected!!! Why? He should have been binned off there and then. Why he was allowed to hang about is an outrage. I hold him party responsible for the shit show that we've had to endure since.
    • Depends on what the Barista says doesnt it? There was no physical confrontation with the driver, OP thinks she is being targetted when she isnt. These guys work min wage under strict schedules so give them a break unless they damage your stuff
    • CPR Dave, attendance records are available on Southwark's website. Maggie Browning has attended 100% of meetings. Jon Hartley has attended 65%.
